 | New gas water heater but water lukewarm-HELP! Old gas water heater suddenly provided only lukewarm water. It was older so had it replaced today. 3 1/2 hours later water temp is the same from faucets. I can see pilot & feel heat venting, but hot water outlet is not hot. Is there some way pipe can get blocked? Or any other ideas? |

OP: Wait until the burner has stopped firing before making your temperature judgement. |

 | reply to LukeShower In addition, with a hot water faucet turned on, check to see if the hot water pipe from the heater is hot. Feel for a temperature gradient along the pipe. |

 | I now think it's a hot water line slab leak. Reason no hot water is because hot water was leaking somewhere. Could hear faint sound of water running from bathroom until I shut off the outlet valve. Haven't located where leak is. Finding no visible signs of water anywhere yet. Any idea of how much repairs cost & how they do it? I'm thinking water runs in pvc in slab. |

 | reply to LukeShower check for a leak on the hot water pipe, It would be enough that the water going into the tank is not heating up a lot....
I just installed a new 50 UGG tank, 45 MBH, turned it all the way up and it took 45 minutes for it to heat the tank. If it's still burning 3.5 hrs later, you've probably got a leak.
also, you should have shut off valves on the tank. |

But it is possible, even if the leak is not significant enough to cause a noticeable loss of hot water pressure. |

Just a shot in the dark. |

But it is possible, even if the leak is not significant enough to cause a noticeable loss of hot water pressure. Especially in the winter, when the cold water is colder than normal. I still can't imagine it. Those hot water heaters have to be able to recover from a massive drain like 4 showers in a row (family of 4) + washing machine and dish washer running.
I wonder if OP has a hot water mixing valve to prevent scalding temperatures from reaching the faucets. Maybe it went bonkers. |

That is another possibility. Easy test for that, shut off the valve on the hot side of the water heater and open a hot water tap somewhere in the house. If there is any mixing going on somewhere, you'll get pressure and flow of cold water coming out. Run it for a bit to make sure it's not just the residual water in the piping. |

contsolePremium join:2003-12-30 Bloomfield, CT | reply to LukeShower Turn off the incoming water supply valve. Let the unit run until the gas turns off. Turn the valve back on and check a nearby faucet for temperature. At least we would then know if the thermostat is functional. |

 | I shut off hot water outlet valve because I could hear water going out although no water on anywhere in the house. When I turned it back on in the morning, there was plenty of hot water and now outlet pipe was hot. This makes me think pretty likely hot water pipe leak in slab is cause. I think water heaters-old and new-both probably work fine. Someone with leak finding gear coming tomorrow. |

Did you look to see if your water meter is still spinning even though you have all the faucets off (but the water heater on)? |
