Is cable internet speed throttled in evening time every day?

My cable internet service (30Mbps/2Mbps package) was set up on the 13th of Feb. Internet speed was right (30.1Mbps/2Mbps tested by speakeasy)during day time, but it decreased to 5-7Mbps/2Mbps between 7:00PM-12:00AM.

Any new customers experienced such a speed drop?

Probably local node congestion.

Try factory reset of the modem to pick up different channels, give it a try.

What is ur location?

Never...always getting 31/2 regardless of time it seems...it MAY go down 1-2mb but only for a minute or so during peak times. I use an Apple Airport Extreme router.

Thank for your kind suggestion. I would try to do factory reset this evening, then report the result here. My location is in the area of Kingston and 1000 islands with population around 120,000.

Thank you for your help. I use Linksys router E4200. If I experice the low speed, I'll disable wireless and test it to see any difference today evening.

I made thorough test last night. Here were results:

1. 9:30PM: 7.21Mbps/2.08Mbps.
2. 9:42PM: 11.04Mbps/2.09Mbps (after modem factory reset).
3. 12:30am: 30.48Mbps/1.90Mbps.
4. 9:00am: 32.55Mbps/1.90Mbps (today morning).

Clearly, the internet speed throttle is online in evening time, as speed return to the normal immediately after 12:00am. Cogeco control center may put a limit.

These results were sent to Start tech support. I would like to say their support is excellent. I got reply in just 30 min. They promised to solve the problem.

Mine is solid at about 31/2 24/7. I think channel bonding plays a big part. Can you send the Modem Stats ?

Thanks. I use modem DCM476. I am not good at IT technology. Would you like to give me any hints how to check modem stats? By the way, I am not internet speed-holic. My wife likes netflix HD movies. Sometime movie got a pause due to internet speed, which was annoying, especially during evening time.

basically you connect to the modem using the default address and go to Diagnostics. I'm not at home so don't have the address handy maybe someone and chime in and tell you.

That's not throttling, based on those speed test you likely have node congestion.

Node congestion happens during the peak period usually starting around 6pm and going till about 11pm-1am, depending on the area, and can only be fixed if enough users on the incumbent network, in this case Cogeco, and using the same node as you complain about the slow speeds; only than will Cogeco even consider doing an upgrade.

Thank you for your information. I tested again around 9:00pm last night. It seemed that the speed was back to the normal.

Also, thanks for everyone who provided information on this thread. Here is the modem stats at the time when I tested the speed last night:

Forward path numbers are within Spec -15 to +15db but seem a tad high to me. Does seem like a congestion issue.

This last week or two I have evening downloads drop alot as much at to 12mb down. Upload seems consistent though. I have tried factory reset of my Cisco DCP3000 but it did not bring up the speed. This test was done at 11:00p.m out of Cornwall. I wonder if my drops during the evening are for the same reason as yours.

And this is 10:00am the next morning with no resets on any equipment....good luck if it is with Cogeco, but when I had Cogeco the evening was always a congested time and speeds always dropped for years of my service with them.
