Re: Does the leased SB6141 only get firmware updated? Also I got the black model because everything I have is black. PC speakers, router and switch. White looks out of place. |

ltm320 join:2002-02-24 Milwaukee, WI | reply to tonyram57 There is a Aug 2012 firmware for the SB6141, as referenced in another thread on this forum.
I'm about to throw in the towel on my SB6141. Back in December, I had a SB5100 that worked flawlessly. I bought a SB6141 to escape the rental fee. Big mistake.
The SB6141 reboots itself about 3-5x per day.
TWC was out and replaced all the coax from the pole to my house. Same problem. So I bought another new SB6141, knowing TWC was going to say "it's the modem" .. guess what. Same problem.
So it's not the coax, not the modem. It COULD be the firmware, which they refuse to update. I've spoken to about 5 different techs, all of them say it'll never happen. (And I tell each one of them, that's fine, but TWC will need to endure lots of customer calls about the SB6141 until the firmware is updated, which is rumored to help the rebooting problem.
Not sure where to go from here. I'll eBay the two SB6141s and buy something else. Maybe it's DOCSIS 3 that TWC has problems with, maybe I'll go back to what was solid before, the old SB5100.
Really pisses me off. |

 | I read the white retail one has the August 2012 firmware. Which one do you have the black or the white retail? |
|
ltm320 join:2002-02-24 Milwaukee, WI | I have the black one.
The RR techs are coming out on Tuesday, but I have little hope. My belief is that the infrastructure around my block is just not good enough for DOCSIS 3 to keep a solid connection.
I'll give it a few days after the techs come out, then probably buy the venerable SB5101. That thing was solid. |

Did your area have a lot of cable plant replaced, and TWC took awhile to get Docsis 3 there? That is how it was in my area we just got Extreme on 11-30-12 and it snowed very heavily 3 days ago and we had 3-4 disconnects during that day, with two different modems the SB6141 and 5341J. TWC is also coming out Tuesday for me as well. |

 | reply to tonyram57 Out of curiosity, what are you hoping to get with different firmware? What does the white 6141 have that the black one doesn't? |

What does the white 6141 have that the black one doesn't? The newer firmwares, which TWC won't push, don't reboot the modem upon multiple T4 faults. It supposedly drops the channel in question and then tries to pick it up again without a reboot.
Many of the black (eBay) modems are at 1.0.6.3 whereas the newest firmwares available are 1.0.6.10 (IIRC).
1.0.6.3 (August 2011) 1.0.6.6 1.0.6.8 1.0.6.10 (latest - December 2012 IIRC). |

However, as you said, they refuse to update the modems, and multiple reps I have spoken to over the phone have stated that TWC does not push firmware to modems, which begs the question: how the hell does anyone get new firmware? |

| File a lawsuit in court forcing Time Warner cable to update the firmwares. The incompatibility is because they want to force people to use their own modems.
Send a Certified letter to Time Warner Cable and the franchising authority on the modem firmware issue as well.
We need a law firm willing to take on this case against Time Warner Cable.
Please file complaints to the Local Franchising agency like NYC DOITT and also lets see if we can retain an attorney to take on this case.
I agree, this is a common issue unfortunately and it should not be this way. |

Why do that when they know that they are not going to push the firmwares?

Here are quotes from my conversation with her:
"Each CMTS is scheduled to push the firmware to any existing modems/gateways connected to it that need the firmware and have not received it (usually between 12am 5am to minimize customer impact)."
"The update process can take many days/weeks depending on the amount of modems/gateways on each CMTS for each area that needs to be discovered and updated."
"These firmware upgrades are generally pushed to the devices from the headend once they are connected to the plant."
"I have checked our records. I see taht as per your division only one modem is updated with the firmware version: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.10-SCM00-NOSH . "
"It is in the process of updating the modems with latest firmware versions "
I haven't seen any evidence of this on online forums, I'm assuming no one has received the new firmware yet. However, when I talked to over the phone support, 4 different techs all told me that TWC doesn't do firmware, but if they did, it would happen automatically. (Weirdest reply ever, right?) |

 | reply to tonyram57 I hope they do push the update. So far I has this modem for a week and so far no major problems. The thing is I need a 3.0 modem. The 2.0 modems are very annoying in my area because the downstream and upstream channels change constanly and when I stream music which I do a lot it drops out for those breif few seconds during the channel change.
Of course I can't lease a 3.0 because I have EL not TWC and don't have there turbo plans and all they will give me a old crappy 2.0 modem (10/100 MB but I have a Gigabit router) or if I go down there to my TWC I might get a 3.0 but it will be a bulky Arris or a SB6580 but then if a tech has to come to my house he will just swap it for a old cruddy 2.0 modem. My only choice is to own a 3.0 since they channel bond as the 2.0 modems are only signal channel and TWC keeps changing the channel multiply times a day. |

RySean join:2013-02-18 San Diego, CA | Umm, hey guys. I found the actual firmware... If anyone can figure out how to flash it to the modem, that'd be super cool: »sourceforge.net/projects/sb6120.···0-SCM00/ |
|
UKEE join:2012-05-14 Lexington, KY | I found that about a month ago because Motorola firmware is "open source". You can go to the "Open Source" tab on the modem status page and see the various versions of components that were used to "build" the firmware.
The file that you linked looks like the "components" of the firmware and must be built (compiled) before it can be sent to the modem.
I wouldn't even know where to begin (and that's with following the Tomato router firmware project for years, which is also posted on sourceforce.net under the GIT repository (IIRC) lol! ) |
