| 10.8 server, windows machines can't connect to SMB shares So I've got a new mini server here with 10.8 server preinstalled. I have created several shares and the Mac users can access them no problem. But none of the windows machines on the network can access them, even with the share over SMB option enabled...
The server is viewable on the network, when i try to open it it asks for a password, and it refuses to accept ANY password, even the OS X admin password.
Any ideas? I've tried from several XP & Win7 machines. -- F**K THE NHL. Go Blue Jays 2013!!!

| Firewall is off. This is a local file server only no outside access.
This is boggling my mind... the previous Snow Leopard server is still there and accessible to all Windows clients via SMB... -- F**K THE NHL. Go Blue Jays 2013!!!

| I tried searching but all i can find is issues connecting from 10.8 to SMB shares, not the other way around...
Its strange cuz i've got SMB shares mounted from other Windows Servers just fine on the 10.8 machine, so i'm not having those issues... -- F**K THE NHL. Go Blue Jays 2013!!!

| reply to HiVolt Curious... you do have a password set for the admin, right? I can't count how many times I didn't set a password on my admin acccount and was in the same shoes as you. It didn't work until I created one.
If you do have one, and it's not working, are these windows machines on a domain? |

And no, there's no domain. -- F**K THE NHL. Go Blue Jays 2013!!!

I have Synk Professional »decimus.net/Synk/SynkPro.html on my Mac, and use it to mirror certain directories (like my photos, etc) from the Mac to a SMB share on Windows 7/8 systems on my network, as well as my NAS. I do notice that on 10.8, when letting Sync transfer unfettered (i.e. automatically, at "full throttle", so to speak) to the Windows systems, it eventually gives up and gives an I/O error trying to write to the SMB share. It requires a restart of the Windows PC to fix. If I sit there, let Sync scan for files that need to be replicated, and check them /one at a time/ to copy them, it works fine.
This didn't happen with 10.6. I've confirmed that Sync on 10.6 on my MacBook Pro works fine with both the Win7/8 systems under similar conditions, transferring the same files in "automatic/full throttle" mode.
I'm assuming this is because of Apple's direction to move away from using Samba. I have no clue what they're using, but I've definitely had more issues with it. I haven't dug into seeing what it would take to reinstall Samba in 10.8, but I'm pretty darn close to doing so. |

| said by rugby:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/41541/smbup Thanks, but i'd rather not use that... Besides no mention of 10.8 compatibility, all the comments are from Lion users...
Anyway I found an interesting tidbit at the Apple forums... Apparently the trick to adding SMB shares that work is to shut down file services completely including AFP, add the share with AFP & SMB checkboxes, then restart the file services...
I'm going to try that tomorrow morning before everyone is in the office. -- F**K THE NHL. Go Blue Jays 2013!!!

But then again, we don't really setup Apple servers anymore, we have switched most clients to Synology boxes. |

| Well the suggestion from Apple forums worked. Turning off file services, then adding the share with AFP & SMB enabled worked, turned it back on and presto all the PC's accepted the user/password and it's all good...
This is bushleague though, as a simple creation of a shared folder should not involve trickery like that. -- F**K THE NHL. Go Blue Jays 2013!!!
