How about a snap over core current transformer?
I have used this one CR Magnetics CR3110-3000
You can adjust the burden resistor to get the voltage range you need to better resolution. I normally use 1k as this gives about .3V/A output and a 20 Amp range
The thing I like about this one is it's high output voltage makes it more immune to noise than your average current transformer.
But, in my case, I dont mind cutting the wire as i'm going to make adapters for the tools.
Also, cost is a factor, if I need 10 of them, compared to the hall effect on ebay, 4$/item compared to 15$/item.
