Is latency better with Shaw?

At present I am still with Telus, Optik high speed turbo internet and TV. I find the latency just terrible, ping times swing from 40 ms up to 250 ms when testing to a IP just a few kilometers away, makes online gaming a bust. Is the latency better with Shaw internet?

What server are you trying to use? I can do a couple ping and traceroute tests if you want.

I find the ping times usually stable.

Also remember, the more TV's you have (HD included) the slower the speeds and the worse the ping will become.

Not true at all, unless the TV is hogging all of your bandwidth. In most cases you get a fair bit of headroom now.

Latency spikes will happen with either provider when you saturate your connection. The only way around it is to rate limit your connection to around 90% of maximum.

Edit: nevermind its you again. Troll city.

If you really are having problems, stop torrenting while trying to game.

im on shaw i came from telus just over 2 weeks ago i lost about 6-8 ms of my connection, both are fairly stable with ping, the greatest factor making ping go up and down should be the strength of the signal on your line, or how close u are to telus's dslams, here are shaw vs telus ping test results

I moved from Sasktel to Shaw. Sasktel is VDSL2 (interlaced) and my pings in League of Legends were averaging 120ms... stable around that number.

Shaw, 40 - 50ms.

Agreed, my ping times with Shaw seem to be a lot less than my Optik. Shaw also does routing slighty better. I will only slighter as they have their issues as well, but it seems to be slightly less painful as Telus at times.

Considering you had Optik before Telus peered up at SIX, I'd be curious to see some traceroute comparisons on routes you thought were bad with Telus.

Re: Is latency better with Shaw?

well the only thing making telus better then shaw, for shaw to be worth it you gotta atleast be getting the broadband 50 (or the highspeed 25 on shaw if telus 25 isnt available in your area) but i recomend doing what i did, order a month of shaw (broadband 50 is on special for 50 a month, and u can get free instalation if u ask, then u can cancel at any time, keep your telus and your shaw for one month to compare and see if u have issues, i garauntee you will be more happy with your shaw connection

Re: Is latency better with Shaw?

Here are the aggregated results from pingtest.net. They are derived from packet loss, jitter and ping among other factors. Pay attention to the ISP list at the bottom of the page.
