Re: Mech Warrior Online

Lots of very viable builds still out there. I for one think the boating changes have had their intended result, despite the mild negatives. I'd like to see LL's bumped to 3 instead of 2, but even with 3, the heat penalty is relatively minor. Good idea on using the ERLL's as a targeting system lol.

So I've got a meager 3500 games (I say that literally, compared to some of the founders, that's probably nothing) under my belt. I'd say I'm relatively experienced and have had my share of interesting matches.

This one recently (friday) takes the cake though.

Game starts on alpine; we have 6 disconnects on our team. They have 2.

Game starts with Me realizing it's 6v10. Worst part was it was some pretty vital tonnage with two catapults, a victor, and an atlas among the missing. The enemy team is down two.

They lose one as soon as the game starts. 6v9.

At this point, I simply say "Ok guys - we're probably screwed. I'll hold the base, you go cap theirs."

1 of my teammates decide to defend with me; I fire ppc's across the map to entice the enemy to some 'easy kills'. They start filing in, at least 7 of them. Honestly, I lost track. At this point, me and the hunchback (not sure which one) stay to defend. We put up a great fight; at some point one of our teammembers comes back to help. We put down two of them and the match ends. Sure, it's a cap win, but definitely felt like the battle of Thermopylae when it was just two of us against the world. And somehow I lived O_O, though admittedly was moments from death.

Since I'm talking to myself I thought I'd just remark on the newest patch:

1) Advanced zoom is f***ing great. They finally fixed it, and it's totally worth it now.
2) Framerate is about 3-4 FPS faster, and smoother overall.
3) Getting less hung up on small twigs than before. Didn't happen once.
4) Noticing lots of 2xGauss builds, even 2xGauss+1ERPPC. Plus note: They die really fast.
5) The new orion looks pretty cool. It's got an 'old school' feel to it.
6) Tried the tutorial mode. Pretty good for new players, could use some fine tuning but is very decent all told.
7) HSR, HSR, HSR! Wow. you can hit light mechs and man do they blow up good Jenners, Ravens, Spiders, you name it - all go down like they should now.
8) They fixed my blackjack's hitbox issues that I complained about on skype. Pretty cool.
9) Kintaros don't die immediately anymore.

I have to work on my builds now. I noticed even in the patch before that lights were dying a lot easier. I am ont he fence about Gauss. I had switch to to because of the heat penalty to boating PPC's. Now they are hardly worth running at all. Gauss's if you get two, work wonderful, because the timing is the same for both firing weapons. I could try to get used to firing it with the lasers or PPC's but I don't think the benefit is there.

I think my Misery, which I use as a yard stick since it has a decent range of weaponry. I think PPC's are pretty much done, I could try and play around with regular ppcs, instead of ERPPCS, but it would be a waste since ERLL still have siginificantly less heat (especially after there reduced heat buff). So what now for close range combat? I think the ballistic will take time to figure out. I am leaning to using LBX with 1 LPL+2SPL to fill in close range.

This could all change, I try to keep my builds with only 3 types of weapons to limit firing groups and to keep use tighter.

FWIW Official launch is today, though it's mostly a marketing gimmick. The real stuff will come in ... well we don't know when (sigh) possibly as early as oct or as late as never.

I am frustrated with them at this point. While they are working on improvements, both UI 2.0 and CW are not out yet. They should have at least had UI 2.0 out for the launch because "launching" with the original UI will likely frustrate new people.

They should have also had CW ready, but I am more okay with that coming month or two after launch to get new people used to the regular combat. As it stands they are being vague which I was fine with, but launching without some of the key features and improvements is kind of bullshit.

They are not really going to get my time, or money until they start rolling some of the promised features out.

Yeah, I have to agree. UI2.0 is a biggie for me, and should have definitely been in before launch.

Another thing I don't get ... I mean, I know essentially it doesn't mean much as far as the game goes, but there isn't even a mention of the launch on their front page....no hype at all around this...wth?? Part of me is hoping that they're trolling and they will roll out a huge patch with all kinda goodies or something, but....I kinda doubt it.

As someone on reddit put it : I've seen hotfixes with more hype than this.

They're one weird company.

It's virtually impossible not to be cynical about their launch. I'm pretty sure IGP threw them under the bus on this, or PGI is just genuinely that incompetent. Realistically though in my dealings with PGI's execs on twitter/etc they seem OK enough. IGP seems to be the man behind the curtain on this whole mess. Though unfortunately they seem perfectly content to let PGI take the heat. Whatever. End result is still the same. "Launch" is a marketing gimmick, as stated, maybe a minor patch. I'm expecting nothing for at least a month. As it is, I've already dialed back my pretty extensive time put into this game for other stuff.

PATCH AND LAUNCH DAY - SEPT 17TH!

It's not just Patch Day, it's LAUNCH DAY! Congratulations everyone, we made it! As usual the servers will be coming down at 10:00am PDT, and I will let you know when they are back up. Below are the patchnotes for you to peruse at your leisure.

Woo, LAUNCH DAY!

PATCHNOTES:

3, 2, 1, Launch!

Wow It’s been a year since open beta and how time has flown! It has been a fun experience sharing this journey so far but we’re not done, in fact, the opposite is true!

There is plenty of work still on our plate and we are not going to stop till every feature is in your hands. With that said here are some of this patch’s highlights!

The Orion is available for C-bills and has all of its patterns available to customize this amazing mech.
There is a new Applejack Custom Pattern you can equip on you ‘Mechs with some nice new Custom Colors as well.
All the Trials are Champions! Give them a try if you missed them the first time around! You have to buy them to get the XP boost though.
3rd person is disabled in the 12 players pre-made group matches you lucky competitive Warriors.
Non 12 player Matchmaking is tightening its search parameters for Weight and ELO.
Weapon tuning and Bug fixes round out this patch.
Oh yeah and the Credits are up on the Website now with a link from the front end! Legendary Founders included!

See you on the battlefield, MechWarrior’s

Matt Newman

Content

Users can purchase skins for the Orion 'Mechs.
Orion 'Mechs can be purchased with CBills.
New Premium Skin Apple Jack is available for purchase.
New Trial 'Mechs
Jenner JR7-F(C)
Centurion CN9-A(C)
Dragon DRG-5N(C)
Atlas AS7-RS(C)
Gameplay

12 players pre-made group launch is 1st Person View only.
Match making ELO and Weight Class thresholds narrowed down. NB: These changes will not affect 12 player groups.
The longer a match took to kick off, the broader the range the MM uses in terms of matching ELO and weight class.
This reduction means that the MM will no longer search as broad a spectrum over time (still increases but in a narrower range). It will be much more refined in terms of how much variance will be given in matching players and 'Mechs.
Match making timeout increased to 3 minutes.
This allows the MM more time to find players before terminating its search.
Weapons

AC/2
Heat scale multiplier reduced from 1.0 to 0.6.
UAC/5
CD changed to 1.5 (same as AC/5).
Jam rate increased to 20% (up from 15% but still down from 25%).
Flamer
Range increased to 90m (up from 64m).
Heat impulse balance so target takes more heat than player (heat generated on target increased and self generation decreased).
Front End

Added a credits button to the login screen.
Bug Fixes

Fixed an issue where users are experiencing severe heat from the center volcano area in Terra Therma.
Fixed an issue where the lava in Terra Therma is causing unintentional damage to Mechs.
Fixed a number of stuck bugs in Forest Colony, Frozen City, and Terra Therma.
Fixed an issue where the 3rd Person drone appears to have weapon collision to the user firing.
Fixed an issue where the spectator will remain in 1st person view when spectating a 'Mech in 3rd person view.
3rd Person drone will no longer spawn in Testing Grounds for the dummy 'Mechs.
UAV should no longer interfere with the 3rd Person camera by snapping camera back and forth when launching an UAV.
Fixed an issue where PPC is still colored yellow when aiming at a 'Mech below 90m.
Gauss Rifle will no longer charge when out of ammo.
Fixed key hold repeat issue for Backspace in chat windows.
Fixed chat messages being cut off in chat windows. Fixed the Hunchback Founder 'Mech colour.
Fixed an issue where users could not colour all three channels on the Hunchback Founder 'Mech.
Fixed an issue where shooting a specific point on the destroyed actuator of a Blackjack's side torso will damage the opposite side torso.
Fixed an issue where certain users were seeing blue tree sprites in the Forest Colony maps.
Fixed an issue where shadows would flicker depending on the angle of the camera.
We thank you for your patience and we look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!

Just another day in the neighborhood :X I mean at least the game is stable without all the bugs since when I first started playing open beta. But they really read something to retain players after the 2-3 month orgy of death that most will do.

Yeah, that was my original disappointment when I found out that MW5 got cancelled and it became an MMO instead... MW did not become popular solely because it's giant fucking robots with rockets and lasers (As awesome as that sounds), MW became popular because of the awesome world it exists in, with all the clans, factions, mechs, tech, mercs, etc.

I had some fun at first when it just went into closed beta for about a month and then gave up... I then came back a year later after some changes and had some good fun for a few months again when you guys got active here... and now it's just old and even when I do log in, I sometimes can't even bring myself to want to start a match...

They really need to get CW going and find a way to implement the awesome universe of MW into the game a lot more and give it meaning in the game, and not just make a bunch of updates using the lore and have jack in the game itself.

Well to be fair - the game was incredibly broken when I started. I mean incredibly broken.

Crashed every 3-5 matches, like clockwork
Shitty framerates
Bad game mechanics (movement speed, hit registration, weapons were a complete wreck in terms of balance)
The goddamn hud bug(s)

It also was incredibly lacking in content.
Maybe 10 total mech chassis available. This did matter to me because frankly I didn't like many of the chassis in game (awesome, stalker, catapult, etc).
like 6 maps (2 were night vers)

Now we're like 24 total mechs, very balanced game mechanics, functional game that doesn't crash and gets good framerates, like 2x as many maps (and not even a night mode yet for the new ones).

So from that standpoint, that gives them an excellent base.

My problem is that they basically fucked up their releases.

Closed beta was like pre-alpha.
Open beta was like alpha
Launch is like beta.

CW/UI 2.0 is like launch.

WELCOME TO LAUNCH, MECHWARRIORS!

State of the Inner Sphere

It’s been just over two years since we entered pre-production on MechWarrior Online in summer of 2011. We unveiled our plans on Halloween 2011 and then spent another year in development before releasing our first open beta version on October 29th, 2012. Since then we have patched the game over 29 times, and have registered over 1.3 million players, and we continue to see amazing growth and engagement from our community!

Since Open Beta launched, we have added 100s of new features: including visual customization, ELO match making, 13 new `Mechs, 4 maps (soon to be 5), tutorials, testing grounds, new modules and consumables, improvements to the UI and HUD, additions to the end of round summary screens, new user stats, controls options, new team play options and coordination in the form of lance and company commands, the massive 12 v 12 feature, 3PV, new `Mech movement on slopes, `Mech qwirks, and much more. Not to mention tuning, bug fixes, and performance enhancements, which have significantly improved the quality of the game during our open beta phase.

With launch officially here, players can expect MechWarrior to continue to storm ahead with regular semi-monthly patches for the foreseeable future. We have a full slate of expansion features coming out during the next year, which include our new entire re-envisioned user interface, private matches, level and rank system, the ability for players to join and create custom mercenary units, new game modes, Clan technology, and the epic battle to control the Inner Sphere. All of this in addition to our regular monthly content updates and events. Expect us to continue delivering new maps throughout the next year, with some exciting new concepts like Island Metropolis out in October, and Moon Base due out in December.

We have captured the essence of what it means to be a MechWarrior pilot and we look forward to expanding the MWO universe with exciting new content for many years to come!

Operation 24

Celebrate Launch and the fielding of 24 `Mechs on the battlefield with Operation 24! Play any 24 games (win, lose or draw) between September 17th and October 1st (10am PDT) to receive a cool in-game “Operation 24” hanging cockpit item automatically.

Launch Event

On Thursday Sept 26th, Infinite Game Publishing and Piranha Games will host the official MechWarrior Online North American Launch Event and Tournament at The Mezzanine in San Francisco. Registrations to compete in the North American Launch Event Tournament are closed, but you can tune-in to watch the invitational tournament and festivities live at www.twitch.com/mechwarrior from 2 p.m. Details can be found at »mwomercs.com/events.

They improved a lot compared to closed beta, but the game still feels pretty empty to me at the end of the day (my inability to play anything heavier than a light probably doesn't help me though...)
They need to do something more than just releasing new mechs and go back and worth with small hotfixes.

And yeah, their releases are horrible... but that can be forgiven to a degree. Their PR is a lot worse in that department though.

There is almost zero communication to the fan base (who began spending money since closed beta... ) and the little communication that they offer ends up making the situation worse if they never said a word because they are contradicting themselves every damn time.

"Everything is good, we will release X on Y."
A few days before Y?
"X will not be released on Y"

"Everything is how we like it. X will not change."
A few months later, in the patch notes...
"X changed."

They got to stop shooting themselves in the foot. I's one thing to change your mind or go back and review something again... but they really suck at communicating it.

I gave up. I spent too much time getting mechs the way I wanted them only to find out the next week it behaves differently due to extreme nerfs.

They waffle on nerfs too much. Nerf to much, then change the behavior of the item, then crank it up a little, then throw in a little unexplained ghost heat.... UGH!

I'll give it a couple months and try again since I have money into it. But for right now they are just making too many radical changes.

TBH they're pretty much done with that and they were very up front about doing major weapons balancing 'up until launch' - I guess the part of that you missed was way back right out of CB they were super slow to get on the stick and took far too long to modify weapons. As a result you had huge overblown metas arise which caused some really retarded situations to occur.
