automatic snooping of wireless devices to track viewing??

Sounds pretty suspicious to me. Why does Neilsen need to track such things in the first place? I'd think customers buying the products being advertised is proof enough of effectiveness with marketing, why snoop to see what they are watching. And does it stop at mainstream sites like netflix, or does it snoop anything that is viewed? That would be pretty invasive I think. Like if I watch a legal copy downloaded from itunes on my device from time to time, is it going to track that every time I do it? I think privately owned hardware should be unavailable for this sort of tracking, or at least grant consumers an opt-out from tracking. Your private life is your own business.

The way Nielsen has always worked is a lucky person gets chosen to have the monitor installed in their home.

It is the user that wants it installed.

My brother in law installs them.
