Please help setting up ping for sagem f@st 1704.
My internet service has been very poor of late, and I'd like to use the DSLReports ping monitor to help document my troubles. I've used the service in the past without incident, but I'm having trouble getting it setup now.
What do I need to do to set my router to respond to pings? It seems like there used to be a simple check-box for something like, "respond to icmp pings over wan" or something. I don't see anything for it, now, though. I can ping the router successfully from inside the network, but I suspect that it is dropping everything from outside the network. What do I need to do to set this up so that it works?
You mentioned that you have used the service before, was that before Windstream bought IowaTelcom? The reason I ask is that you should not have to change anything in the 1704 to get it to respond to icmp pings. Also it is my understanding that some networks do not allow icmp ping traffic at all, so I suppose a better question to ask is do we know that the ping is even getting to the modem, or that the modem is in fact not responding? Has wireshark been run?
Another possibility is that if you are getting packet loss that could be affecting the ping, or if your signal is degrading to the point of being unusable.
Have you posted your phone number in Windstream Direct or sent a PM to any of the agents that work the forums? If not please shoot me a PM with your phone number, and a link to this thread and I will touchbase with you Monday afternoon.

Thank you for the quick response.
I used to use the pingmonitors here, maybe a year ago or perhaps 18 months ago. I'm not sure what has changed, but certainly I believe Windstream has updated the router's firmware a few times, so it is possible that the settings are different. As far as running packet sniffers or whatever, no - I haven't tried anything that involved. I am certainly losing connectivity often enough that pings do not always go in or out, but in general I am able to ping out with no problems. Using websites that test against the public IP, however, all fail w/ destination unreachable. I'm pretty sure that the router is dropping any ping requests. I'm not sure if it's related, but I am also having trouble navigating the router/modem's web interface. Often, clicking a page or a link gets me a pink screen with a "400 Bad Request /No request found. /microHttpd" type error. I think the device has probably always done this, but it seems worse lately.
I have been on the phone with Windstream's customer service a lot lately, but haven't reached out to anyone on the boards yet. A tech came out last weekend and may come out today, but with my issue being somewhat intermittent, I thought that the line monitor would be a great way for me to develop some documentation about the issues I'm seeing.
I'm happy to field the questions - my apologies if I failed to include all the information you might need to help. I'll go ahead and PM you my contact information, as well.
Thanks again for the personal attention. I'd really like to get my humble connection back into workable shape.
|reply to PariahInIowa | I'm not sure what changed (something you did, perhaps?), but the line monitor started working on Friday.
The line monitor started working.
