Re: [Serious] Please cross your fingers for a good outcome?

How are you doing? I toddle by every now and then to see if you've given us an update.

Just letting you know ...

Thank you both for asking. Am doing well so far--updates would be boring. I got heartburn but Prilosec stopped it. My state of mind is good with the fight finally on. Look forward to another week of treatments; weekends without them seem like wasted time right now.

I hear you...but you know "down time" is important too! Even the fiercest fighters need to rest between rounds

Please enjoy those weekends...all time is precious.

=============

Update: Will have 6th (final) chemo next Wednesday, 5/22, and have 9 (of 30) radiation treatments remaining, including tomorrow. My understanding is that it will take a couple of months until scans will show how things went.

Heartburn and general chest discomfort are present but certainly not to an extent worth complaining about thanks to big doses of Prilosec and Mylanta. I'm using two different inhalers (Albuterol and Advair) to avoid losing lung function from radiation if possible.

All in all, things have gone far better than I dared hope.

Wow! When you decide to fight, you really get busy and fight! I'll do some more leg raises, kick backs, abductors, adductors and heel slides to cheer you on!

I must work harder. I'm suddenly feeling very lazy.

I appreciate the offer but DON'T want you to work harder to cheer me on. Please. If something went wrong, I'd never forgive either one of us.

The credit for fighting really goes to my doctors and their technicians. I just show up.

That's on my birthday. If I had a birthday wish, its that all your days be one continual improvement, and greater joy than your previous day!

Keep up the good news!

I just love how you take responsibility for me. Nobody has done that since my little mother was alive.

No worries, Dear. I don't tend to overwork me these days and, truthfully, I really should be working a little harder, especially now. Russie would be on my case if he could see how lazy I have become. And, there was a little winkie there, just in case it wasn't obvious enough.

And you ARE fighting hard. Just showing up for the treatments is worthy of a "MY HEROINE" medal. As somebody else said, you (your attitude and courage) is truly inspirational.

I don't know if you would want to brave it, but some people swear by wheat grass juicing when on chemo. I'd be doing it if I had a proper masticating juicer (the centerfugal models won't cut it with wheat or barley grass).

You only need 2 to 4 ounces a day, mixed with other, more palatable juices. I like apple, carrot, ginger, parsely.

From what I understand, nascent plants have healing qualities that adult plants don't have. For instance, Broccoli sprouts are cancer fighting, orders of magnitude greater than the mature plant.

I used to buy cantaloupes and juice 1/2 of one, whole (yep, the whole thing) and mix it with 2 OZ. of wheat grass juice.

Wheat grass juice is very sweet and a little cloying, and has a strong mineral taste (well, it should, it's full of them).

I know it's healthy, but don't think juicing is for me. Thanks for the information, though.

I'm sorry. There hasn't been much worth sharing and I've been sleeping/resting a lot.

The last chemotherapy was May 29 and the last radiation treatment was May 31. Both doctors feel I tolerated them very well and hope I'll perk up soon. They're also saying that as far ahead as 2 months, I could develop new side effects such as sudden decrease in ability to breathe. So many possibilities! Have seen one doctor or the other weekly.

It will be years before I can let myself start to think maybe no bad cells got away and hid someplace to pop up later but am trying to be optimistic. Won't ever be as optimistic as I was before this recurrence but can't live in constant fear either.

Thank you all so much for your concern.

Edit: Yesterday, the radiation oncologist mentioned doing a PET scan in about three months (September-ish?). That would be the next point in progress to wait for now unless blood tests give reason to look sooner.

Breathing can be important. There are times when I have a decrease in my ability to breathe due to COPD and it can be pretty scary. I find that if I don't panic and I use a technique called "pursed lip breathing" that I become somewhat stable. Check with your doctor and see if the technique could help if breathing becomes a problem for you. It is also something that you can practice before you actually need it.

Thanks. It's good to know, especially since such a point was made about sudden onset.

They've had me on Advair and Ventolin. I can still climb stairs to our 3rd floor (no elevator) apartment; that ain't bad.

Getting up to the 3rd floor is great, I don't think that I could do it. Quite often I have to use pursed lip breathing to make it up 13 steps to the 2nd floor here. It does make it easier for me.

I can't complain at all about the function left after the lower right lobe was removed in 2010. Was very lucky.
