RebriderBeen There Done ThatPremium join:2000-11-23 | McAfee??? Got new computer today, Win7X64 and it has McAfee installed and runs thru May 2014. Many years ago and I mean way back when, I used it. I haven't used or looked at it since. It's full blown and free until 2014 but, I'm not sure if I trust it. Actually i don't know anything about it now. I remember that it screwed up my 98SE machine and I dumped it and never looked back. Not looking for poll results just real experience that y'all have or had with it. I read all the hype about this or that AV but nothing beats real user info.

It doesn't drag a system down like it did back then, and I've had no trouble with it. I have it on one system for a less than computer proficient person, and I have Kaspersky Internet security on mine. Norton Internet Security is much better at not requiring a lot of interaction that the user may not know the correct answer to. -- Proud ASAP member since 2005 Microsoft MVP/Consumer Security 2009-2010 |

To be honest, I've not used it in years, but as someone pointed out here recently, it is the configuration settings that keep you protected. Understand those and any of the top 10 will sort 50% of issues out. The other part is a limited user and understanding browser settings can void any protection, especially in an admin acct. |

IT is likely a good program. All the AV's are constantly changing and competing with one another and by the time one reads a review the review is likely out of date. |

1 edit | reply to Rebrider The best security set ups use a layered approach. If you have McAfee for free till 2014 keep it. Just use other software to enhance your protection. Even if you are behind a router firewall turn on your windows firewall, and use either the free version or pro version of Malwarebytes. I use the free version myself to do occasional scans on my PC's but you can use the pro to run a a resident scanner all the time.
