noneleft join:2011-08-24 Niagara Falls, ON | [INTERNET] Cogeco, your usage meter is broken. Is anybody else able to access the usage meter? I haven't been able to for the past 2 days. Yesterday morning I was getting a message saying "Please try accessing your data page later." Yesterday night I couldn't even log in to my.cogeco.ca because of maintenance, and now I'm getting the same message telling me to try again some other time.
How are we supposed to monitor our usage and stay within our ridiculous limits if Cogeco can't even reliably provide us the tools to do so? |

I wasn't aware that they had ever fixed it.
But you raise a good question.
And it has been discussed here in detail last year and never resolved.
BTW, I left them for START, and that was one of my reasons.
In MY case, and most other folks at the time, generally we COULD reach the usage meter, but they neglected to update it for sometimes 4 days at a stretch, and then it would suddenly and mysteriously catch up.
So much for planning ! |

I figured I'd give it a try and see if it was working for me I clicked through Cogeco's page to found it, got to this page - »www.cogeco.ca/web/on/en/resident···sage.php
I clicked where it reads Log in to "My account"... nothing happens. However if I right click on that link and paste it into my browser, it came up with the login page. Weird.
I logged in and my usage is listed for the 23rd. No idea if its accurate or not but the system is working and my usage is there. |

| reply to noneleft Say you have 11 months left, on Ultimate 30.
Cogeco $67 X 11 = 737.00 (assuming full price of $72 minus $5/mo contract rebate) Start $50 X 11 = 550.00 Difference: 187.00
Minus 1 month of Cogeco (notice period) minus $75 ECF. 187 - 67 - 75 = 45.
Save $45 total, get 75G extra usage each month, and get to use one of those nifty "no cogeco" avatars.

Math-wise, the closer you get to the end of the contract the less the math works in your favour.
I must admit, paying that $75 early cancellation fee is distasteful, I've paid it, and I'll leave it to others to figure out if the 30 day cancellation notice period is even legal. But the feeling of being Cogeco-free (over a year now for me) is awesome. Not quite as nice as Bell-free (going on 5 years), but pretty darn close.

How are we supposed to monitor our usage and stay within our ridiculous limits if Cogeco can't even reliably provide us the tools to do so? You are just noticing? It's been broken since they deployed it more than 4 years ago! Don't forget - the meter is for COGECO and not you! It's a system that lets them know how much more money they can make out of you for no reason. When you see massive spikes in your average usage for no reason and then they charge you for what their meter says is over usage, you know something is wrong! Why do you think so many people are leaving them? |

You do know that you are not really free of Cogeco? They own the infrastructure and as long as you are using any cable Internet service, you are still potentially at their mercy. They still own the last km the same as Bell owns that last km for all DSL wholesale customers. Having said that, it's still better than putting up with Cogeco all the way! |

Consider this. I was spending close to $200 a month with them. Fpr several years.
Now I pay them $0. That's free enough for me.
Alas, I'm moving back to Toronto shortly. Rogers country. In my initial phone calls with them, they refused to budge on the usage. Thought I'd give them a chance, tack the internet onto the HD VIP television package. No go. So I'll stick with Start Communications, and pare down the TV to the bear minimum. They too could have easily had my $200+ a month, if they were even a little more reasonable on the usage, which costs them pennies per GB.
