1 edit | [Southeast] Upstream issues, VZ support says they can't help So for the last few months I've been getting horrible upstream speed. I was on a 50/20 plan and a few days ago upgraded to 50/25 (the newest tier for what I was paying). Back in November they replaced my ONT's power supply (and I was told the ONT as well but I"m not sure, I was out of town). They also upgraded me to to the new Actiontec router for Gigabit and 802.11n.
I don't know when my upstream took a dive but last week I called and after two and a half hours I was getting 58/34. An hour later the system kicked in and switched me to the new 50/25 tier/package and things were still flying fast though it also switched me to cat5 which is odd because they said I'd have to call billing and have that changed over. Whatever, it was working and I had no probably dangling the cable out the window till I get around to getting a proper run in place.
Now I'm back to 58/.12 (as in 120kbit upstream). Sometimes the Verizon speed test won't even finish. Yet the downstream is consistent and fine. This is the same if I unplug every device except my laptop. And prior to this being an issue again I was getting consistent 58/30 range on various systems, even my wireless Macbook Air.
So I called again just now and I was told that the last time I called the NT did nothing to fix anything. Yet I remember last time I was told that the NT reset my profile by switching it to a different profile then switching it back. Whenever I've had FIOS problems in the fast it was always some random "cross connect" issue that was always quickly resolved. This call I was told repeatedly that they did nothing to fix it last time. Finally I blew up on the phone call and the tech indicated that it must be my router. At first I was told it was because my router was handing out "non-standard" DHCP addresses. Well, I change it's configuration. In any case, whatever it hands out to affect my upstream speed yet everything else around the house is fine is rather interesting. I don't believe it and it's just an excuse for them to not do any troubleshooting on their end. Whatever, a new router is on the way.
Are there any FIOS techs on here that would actually be able to look into why I would have terrible upstream issues? I can't see how it could be any wiring, settings, etc.. on my end. If it were I should have terrible upstream or limited connectivity anyway. The bandwidth monitoring on the router shows nothing ever over about 600kbit upstream and including downstream are only ever high when I'm running various speed tests.
This is really crazy and frustrating. I feel that my next phone call is going to be to Cox to have them setup service again just so I can call back to FIOS with "well, I don't have problems while on Cox's connection" but at this point maybe they don't want my money anymore so I may be stuck with that as my only option. I really really want to try out a faster tier on a 2yr contract but damn, if they can't get this issue resolved to some degree I just don't see how that would be feasible. Finally, if I were to go with business service would I get better support? That would be an option as well though it's more expensive. I work from home and need my connectivity so maybe it's the right one.

The only last thing you can try is when its slow upload, connect wired, with the wireless disabled to your router ( in-case you have a neighbor stealing your bandwidth ) two different computers, one at a time to verify its not the laptop.
One last thing is check the router logs, I had once some issues, seems I got an IP that was being DOS'ed like mad, shutdown, waited for a couple house powered everything back up and pulled a new IP |

| reply to Lumberjack Well now speedtest.net is showing upwards of 10Mbit but Verizon's site is barely able to upload anything. Yes, when I tested before I had wireless disabled and only my one system wired.
The bandwidth logs don't show any leaching so that shouldn't be an issue. Also, when they "fixed" it last time I ended up with a new IP as well. I generally also disable WAN ICMP but I've left it open for testing for the time being.

On consideration is you have a bot infection on one of your devices, resetting the IP, works until the infected device phones home to the BOT
Just throwing out suggestions ... |

 | Sounds like a provisioning issue like I had back when I upgraded to the 150/65 plan.. I went from 35/35 to it, after the system upgraded me I was getting 150 down and only a few megabits up.
They came out and replaced the ONT which made no difference, then they finally did some triaging on their end and everything was fine. |

Re: [Southeast] Upstream issues, VZ support says they can't help Well, they sent me a 100mbit "older" router to replace my 1gbit "red" router. Both Actiontecs. No difference. Tested before swapping 58/5. After swapping 58/1. I wonder if something is just goofy with their test server. The speedtest.net site now has me at 58/18. I'm supposed to be 50/25. Sigh. -- »www.fairtax.org |

| reply to Lumberjack I guess I should point out though, both speedtest.net and speedtest.verizon.net were both giving me over 50/30 after my initial call in (the one before last when I posted originally). Every test was that high. Even my iPhone on WiFi was getting 20/20 or so with speedtest.net's iPhone app. -- »www.fairtax.org |
