Re: So, the results came in, what happens now...???if you're on cable I would say leave...
I would bet cable users will be stuck on 28/1 till earliest july/august. When finally we would get switched to APOI and be forced onto new plans with the new speeds but significantly higher prices.
Marc has already said they were eating the costs for the last while to shelter us in hopes this would come down fair. It didn't come down fair.
Start is selling 45/4 for $60 with 350GB and that is hurting them. If we think that we are going to get that or better out of APOI TekSavvy I think we are dreaming.
Rogers is throwing out unlimited candy right now and while they might be the devil, its hard to turn down some freaking awesome candy. $105 might be the public list price on 45/4 unlimited but they are giving discounts out on top of that. Go check RFD for what people are getting, you might just want to make that deal with the devil. |

Pretty sure Marc said they were eating costs for DSL, not the Cable. |

said by Scycotic:Pretty sure Marc said they were eating costs for DSL, not the Cable. TSI said they priced their cable plans based on speculation that revised rates would be cut roughly in half but what they got instead was a ~10% further raise. On the other hand, they did get roughly what they expected for DSL. They were "eating" the cost on both ends but with the new rates, they will be "un-eating" the cost on DSL due to retroactive refund which will cover part of the costs they did not expect on the cable side of things. |

You can leave us with crappy upload speeds but at least get rid of the $10/month dry loop. Almost every independent charges for dry loop because Bell charges them fees (which Bell does not charge their own customers...convenient). The notable exception is Electronic Box. Their DSL prices remain insanely good, and their 15/1 and 25/10 plans (with free dryloop) are miles ahead of the competition at the moment. I love TSI's service (I'm on cable) but I'm impressed by whatever eBox is doing on the DSL side. I don't understand how EB offers rates that are THAT good when TSI says they are eating costs. How are two IISP's so far apart? |

Independents need to set up a co-op with equal access to the members. None of them on their own will be able to do it |

None of them on their own will be able to do it Initial costs would be so high early adopters would need fork over thousands each to get started, or pay high montly rates, as high as you would to incumbents or more to pay off a bank loan or investors who would pay for the initial roll out. Just look at this COOP in Quebec: » www.cooptel.qc.ca/en-res ··· esse.phpAnd they're using DSL, which means they're really a COOP IISP, they didn't lay down their own infrastructure for access. |
|
|
This co-op wouldn't have end client products, all they would do is lay infrastructure and charge fees much like the ones bell charges teksavvy for use. Teksavvy Arcanac and all the other independents get access and pay similar fees they pay today for peering and access to the co-op allowing for maintenance and future growth. All new equipment, no old infrastructure to support and products that could range all the way up to Gigabyte access. They need to start in the right places and expand but I think it could be done |

If Teksavvy had 125GB caps I'm sure they can lower prices too. If you take their 20mb plan at $70 with 125GB usage, +$5/25GB to 300GB that's $100/mth for comparable service, and with Teksavvy you get unlimited usage in the wee hours. And FTTH would be insane as a business plan ALTHOUGH if there's live fibre under your sidewalk, the money for an installation might not be that high. It's when you need to dig up a street/sidewalk, trench... gone are the days to climb telephone poles to tap into cable. |

Acanac posted something about their new cable pricing in Rogers area: » community.acanac.com/aca ··· start=75"Unfortunately, we will be increasing rates within the Rogers territory in the next few days. With that said, we will continue to offer unlimited service. We will also honor terms prior to the price increase." |

said by Rickkins:So, basically it means we are all going to dsl for high speed..?? Not necessarily. We're still waiting on APOI prices and packages, particularly Rogers areas since those capacity costs are lower than Cogeco's. I think what some people are forgetting is that Bell capacity prices were halved, and TSI was eating costs and losing money on DSL for over a year now. So the reduced costs need to cover the currennt loses and then whats left they will use to reduce prices and/or increase caps, it won't be as a big a difference I believe as people believe. |
