Ubuntu 12.10 wireless drivers

I have run ubuntu based distros on this Dell One 2010 for several years. I do seem to recall having to pull some tricks to get the wireless working on Linux Mint 12, but I don't remember what I did. I just did a fresh install on ubuntu 12.10 yesterday. Usually during the install you can connect to a wireless network, but it didn't show wireless available this time. After the install was complete, the wireless did work however. The next thing I did was use the update manager to do system updates. After the reboot, the wireless is not working again. So the drivers are installed, but the update broke them. How can I get the wireless working again.

Well, you need to start troubleshooting at the bottom. Please post the output of:

sudo lspci -v

Just the section for your wireless device.

Yes, very good. This shows that your hardware is detected and that a kernel driver is loaded for it. Unfortunately, I am not an expert with the Broadcom cards.

If no one else comes along to help you, I am sure you can get excellent help in the Ubuntu Forums. Here is a thread that might help:

Good luck,

I got it. it was the firmware-b43-installer package I needed. I don't understand though. It's working, but the software center says there are still additional drivers available. Is there any advantage to the proprietary drivers? I'm not an open-source purest, but I'd rather stick with the open-source drivers, unless there's a compelling reason not to.

If your current setup is working, I wouldn't try to fix it.
Like you I will install the binary blobs when needed, but if everything works without them then that's great in my book.

I'm still having problems. It drops the wireless connection whenever I'd downloading something that take more than a minute or two. I tried turning on the additional drivers, but now It's not working at all again.
