PToN join:2001-10-04 Houston, TX | Anyone using Storage Spaces? Hello,
I am wondering if anyone is using Windows Storage Spaces that could comment on the real world pros and cons that you have experienced.
I am in the process of re-designing the way we serve storage to users and i was primarily gonna go with DFS, but then i read about Storage Spaces. Our main issue is to be able to add storage as needed and be able to grow it without allocation a lot.
For example, i dont want to allocate 2TB when we are just using 800GB; i would like to easily just allocate 1TB and when we get to 90% utilization we would simply add a new disk and expand the available offering.
Thanks for the inputs. |

 | No experience with storage spaces, but you could take a look at Flexraid as an alternative. It offers drive pooling as a feature, and there is a 14 day free trial, so you could try it out on a test box first. Seems to be well supported, and the forum sees a lot of traffic. |

I have a 6TB RAID 5 array on my file server using hardware RAID instead of letting Storage Spaces handle that. I tried letting Storage Spaces handle that with parity or 1/2 copies and it wasn't as fast as the hardware RAID.
Storage Spaces does support dynamic expansion of both the virtual disk and the storage pool. It uses VHD technology to make the virtual disk(s) so it can dynamically expand as needed and you can expand the max size as well.
I don't think Storage Spaces can replace the replication and redundancy of DFS though but I could be wrong. I know it's been a while since you posted this, have you made any decisions or anything? |
