[Scam] Call: "Your computer is infected" scam.

This morning I got a phone call (caller ID: out of area, unavailable) with some heavy Indian accent guy claiming to be from microsoft windows support or similar. He knew my first and last name. (I am on the do not call list).

He told me that my computer is infected and he needs to fix it.

I told him that i know that this is a scam and was ready to hang up, but he immediately denied and said that this is completely legitimate and serious and that he will prove that I am infected. I had about 10 minutes to kill before leaving so I thought I play along... (smiling)...

Anyway after some further discussion, he had me pull up a cmd shell and type in the command "assoc". Then he told me to scroll to the end and he will tell me my "Computer ID" to prove he is legitimate.

He offered to tell me my full ID, starting with 888 (the line read: ".zfsendtotarget=CLSID\{888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062}"), which is of course identical on any recent windows computer ).

I interrupted him telling him that I know this is not my computer ID and asked for his name and phone number. At this time he hung up, muttering the words "bastard".

Sound very similar to what is described here.

Do a google search for "CLSID\{888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062}" for many more similar stories.

Anyway, they are still out there but I haven't seen it mentioned here.

Ha, that's a good read. Nice to see they're constantly evolving into different forms of scum.

I always enjoy those calls... especially when I can get them to ask me to press the windows key.

(I am on the do not call list).

I usually hangup, as soon as I recognize that a caller is violating DO NOT CALL, or is making an illegal robocall. And it doesn't take long to recognize that.

A few years ago, I remember looking at the web site of one of these scammers. So I clicked the link for it to scan my PC. And then, I watched in awe, is it listed all of the files it was scanning.

I was running linux. None of those Windows files existed anywhere on my box.

Unfortunately, there are lots of gullible people who will fall for their scams.

A scam indeed. This one involves fraudsters posing as Microsoft technical representatives offering to resolve computer issues and is thought to have ripped off a lot of people in different countries.

These are a few of the phone numbers reportedly used by the scammers:

800-698-9034
206-456-0661
425-905-3074
235-683-4810
125-382-0308

and several others. I found them all at »www.callercenter.com and I wonder if these scammers are all connected.

One of these f*wads called me today. I needed a break so I played along for a while. Tells me to type an address into Internet Explorer and hit enter. I tell him I'd be happy to if my computer wasn't locked by the FBI. He has no idea what I'm talking about. "No matter what I do this screen telling me I have to send money to the FBI to unlock the computer. I would, because I really want to update my computer so it's protected, but I can't go out because I'm under house arrest wearing a monitoring bracelet that will summon the cops if I go a few feet past the front door." The dude hung up when I asked if he could send an email to my probation officer to let him know I'm here and what's happening with my computer.

For any unwanted calls from "strangers" I just first ask after their introduction if they can hang on for a minute as someone is at the door or some such story. I then set the live phone down and walk away. I don't come back for about 15 minutes and hangup or disconnect.

I also got one of those calls, and it was also from an Indian guy who was reading from a script, his accent was so heavy I could barely understand him.

I didn't have a lot of time to play with him, but he said that my Windows computer had been compromised and because of that, my copy of Windows had been invalidated, and with his help, I could get it validated again.

So, I told him that I was running more than one version of Windows, and asked him what version had been invalidated. He replied with "Windows", I said "Yes, but what version? Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8?" There was a long pause, and he finally said "Windows 7". I don't have any Windows 7 machines, and I was running out of time, so I simply hung up on him.

The CID said the call was from 1-818-949-8117
