The following also do not work:

army.mil
af.mil
marines.mil

But putting the "www." in front of both and you can get to both just fine.

The only one that does work is "uscg.mil" which redirects to "www.uscg.mil," but USCG is not part of DOD anymore, it's DHS, so perhaps superior IT support helps? ;-)

Look at your address bar when you get there with just navy.mil. You will see that Firefox added www. to the front of navy.mil because navy.mil alone failed to resolve.

Try using »www.navy.mil instead; that site has A records (on akamai.net), and it works.
