[Beginner] XP??

Hi guys,

Right to the point - can you load ONLY XP on a blank G4? No VM, just XP as the only OS.

I'm trying to help an almost computer illiterate friend who needs a new computer but she only knows XP and I only have the G4.

Thanks )

That is one way to get it working, but I have no idea how well it will run.

I helped my computer illiterate friend 'switch' in ten minutes. Just a thought?

Virtual PC....whilst good in the pre OSX days, was NOT true Virtualization, and compared to VirtualBox/Parallels and certainly BootCamp, it will be 'dog slow' on a G4......

Much better idea, teach your friend OSX........it will be quick and painless and after XP......fun!!!!!

XP came out in 2001. Time to learn something new.

I meant, there is nothing "broken" about XP, still the 2nd most popular OS after Win7 and widely supported. No reason to 'learn anything new'. If she needs a replacement machine, I'd recommend a refurb from a local electronics store. Our local Microcenter routinely has refurbed Dells and HPs for around $140 (Core2Duo, Win7 machines) or $80 (for P4 XP machines). There is nothing "new" to learn about Win 7.

Win 8 with Start8 is almost useable if the machine has to be 'new-new'.

It'll work with Virtual PC on a G4..if you can still find a copy, but be pretty pointless......dog slow.....as in dog with two legs, 'cos in all honesty, my dog with one leg missing would still be effin rapid!!!!!!

what we are trying to say is try n teach your friend to use OSX................

Realistically, you are correct. That would be a 'no'. Windows XP is meant for an Intel type processor and the G4 has a PowerPC type processor made by IBM. The two are just not compatible without a LOT of help. Sorry,

If they're computer illiterate then take five min to show them Safari, iTunes, and Mail ...
Then get on with life because thats probably all they're going to use a computer for anyhow.

Sell the G4, get them a refurb iPad.

If you can't figure out an iPad, you're slower than my 92 year old grandma.

This is my thinking. The less "computer-literate" they are (until you get to a much higher level), the less committed they'd be to a specific platform.

She only "knows" XP, but how well does she know it? Does she know it on a level beyond the point where there are essentially no differences between OS X and XP, besides the window buttons being on the wrong side, and the menu bar sticking to the top?
