Considering a 7970. Anything better or comparable for the 400.00ish GPU price point? I usually stick with Nvidia. But I am not loyal to either.

Also will an i7 vs an i5 be better for running a game and other programs at once because of it's HT'ing?

For most games an i5 vs i7 wont make a difference, but crysis 3 uses all 8 threads on the i7, so since thats what you mentioned in your OP, it may be a good idea to consider the 3770k especially if you want to fraps. The 7970 is a better buy than the 680 right now, but don't plan an maxing crysis 3 with just 1 gpu its a crazy demanding game.

The 3770 looked like the winner just browsing Intel's lineup. Should I go with an Intel motherboard? My last 4 motherboards were ASUS and they all still work. Also have 16 gigs of ram in my current 2 rigs. Should I be shooting for 24-32 gigs for this build?

I use 8GB, and 8 is more then enough for me, granted I don't do fraps or video editing. 16 should be plenty unless you plan on doing a lot of video editing/photo. I use asrock, but really as long as the motherboard has the features you want on it and good ratings it should word. I know you said you didn't care about OCing, but the 3770k will let you if you ever want to, the 3770 wont not sure what the price difference is on them. Personally I always OC, because well its more performance.
