Mechanicsville, VA | Gotta love internet routing....I am less than 10 minutes drive time from Virginia Commonwealth University. However, my internet connection to them has to go from Richmond, south to Georgia, north to Washington D.C., then back to Richmond.
What is strange is that it appears Comcast does not have peering with Level3 in D.C. or anywhere closer than Atlanta coming out of Richmond?

It's proximity to IXs that often matters more, not proximity to servers.
VA should try becoming an I2 connector hub (eg. Northern Crossroads, IndianaGigapop), etc. That would help a lot with peering outside of NoVA.

I would have expected Richmond to route to Ashburn to get to Level 3 and not to Georgia. Comcast speed tests to DC max out my connection so I really cannot see it being a rerroute do to congestion between Richmond and DC.
I guess it is the extra benefit of having a business class connection and static IP so that we have higher latency and avoid burning up our cable connection with the blazing fast speed. /sarcasm |

I am seeing a pattern. I did traceroutes to several other web sites and in order for me here in Richmond to hit a labled OCmcast ibone connection, I have to go down to Charlotte, NC.
I cannot believe that being this close to DC that they have no connection from Richmond to the Ashburn ibone network. |

What's funny is the routing from where I work to my house (on Comcast). It goes from downtown Atlanta (a few blocks from 56 Marietta), up to Roswell, GA (via 56 Marietta), then to Ashburn, VA, then back to 56 Marietta, then up to Marietta, GA.

Pretty damming though when all my trace routes to web sites go through Charlotte but the one to the COmcast Ashburn core router goes through Charlottesville to Ashburn.
And the latency difference shows a correlation also. |
