Creative Expressions 329

usa2k See Profile has passed me the torch.

I thought we could change it up a bit. Not that I haven't enjoyed and learned a great deal from past CE threads. I thought we could try something we haven't done before to keep it challenging and fun. I hope this is OK?

OK everyone, get out your crayons.

For those who do not already know this trick: Copy one of these drawings onto a black background 1024 x 768 then invert the image. Now you have the sketch with pronounced white lines over black which can be re-sized and moved around the canvas. It's also easier to trace, select and fill the image this way.

Re: Creative Expressions 329

Hey everyone,

Since my GPU or possibly, my monitor is on the blink and I'm unable to generate shades of red I was wondering does the tiger that I colored look like a tiger or are the colors off?

Reds and oranges look very dull on my monitor.

Looks ok to me. Maybe a tad to bright on the orange but ok.

OK, thanks.

Hmmm... the brightness may be attributed to the raising of my gamma levels to compensate for the loss of red shades? It doesn't look bright on my monitor.

I take it you really like the color orange. Which is ok as per the forum name Expressions but having the monitor problems you say you have it is almost over the top.
As much and as good graphics work as you do I would have thought the monitor would have been replaced by now. Just my 2 cents worth caused by a boring sleepless night.

The problem is I want to build a new fire breathing, graphic eating machine but my pockets have holes in them. I may have to settle for a replacement GPU and/or monitor.

Hmmm... those files don't look very orange on my monitor? I hope my monitor is not the problem?

This was the top of the line monitor 11 years ago, It cost me close to $1000.00. I bought it because my son was coding video games at the time. One of the games he was working on was called CounterStrike, if memory serves me? He was coding weapons with a group of graphic artists to be used in the game.

Hopefully some money will fall from the sky soon because my money tree has withered.

Looks very orange to me, but not excessive to the point of distortion.

OK, now I see the difference. Geeze, I hope I'm not going colored blind too?

Your colors look more natural which is what I was going for when I did mine.

This is what first came to mind when reading the instructions.

I'm not sure how to approach it. Just add color and background?

In older versions of Photoshop, once you've inverted the graphic you must trace it then select your work. Once you've selected the outline you can then use the paint bucket to fill with colors.

With newer versions you can just use the quick selection tool. This tool automatically traces it for you.

This eliminates the need to paint the colors in with a brush by hand. Once the drawing is traced either manually or with the selection tool you can fill in all or just parts of the drawing using solid colors, gradients, patterns, etc. Here's an advanced illustrated tutorial that should give you a better understanding. »psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials/illus···ce-ship/

You should be able to do the same or something similar in other graphics editors?

I'm using GIMP, which is the freeware equivalent of Photoshop. The tutorial spent most of the time learning how to select an object, then colored the layers as the last step.

I can easily select the lines using the color section tool, but I don't see how to color each section unless they were selected individually. Instead of individual sections, I just used a gradient across the spaceship. Here's what I ended up with. It's a start, I'll keep working on it.

I isolated the spaceship by selecting the outside white areas manually, then deleting. I could also use the scissors tool to cut it out, which is closer to the Photoshop tutorial.

OK, here's what I can do. This is indeed a challenge and a nice change of pace.

Details: GIMP, Retinex (maximize contrast), new layer as Neon (edge selection and highlight), substract, then select and paint by section.

I started with red, then yellow. What's in-between? Orange.

There ya go, it's all just a matter of learning what tools perform what actions. If I'm not learning or creating something everyday I feel like the day was wasted. Although there are days when I just need to veg out in front of the boob tube.

I always say, you can never have too much orange.

I'll admit I'm using CS5 Extended and it does a lot of the hard work for me. For example the "quick selection tool" I mentioned allows me to auto-trace all the lines and then just hover the paint bucket over each section and fill with solid colors, gradients. etc.

I was kind of hesitant to post these not knowing what editors everyone is using. I thought it may be a bit much for the free editors but you just proved me wrong.
