[AZ] Promos for DOCSIS 3 modem or service?

Currently subscribe to the Cox Preferred 25 Mbit service. Have always used Cox and never had streaming issues until recently. Not sure if it started when the service was upgraded in Jan or when netflix rolled out their Ultra-HD service... Either way streaming video from either Netflix or Youtube is very poor. Netflix stops multiple times during a movie or sitcom, youtube always complains about slow internet and changes to lower resolution before stopping altogether. Perhaps if I got a newer modem or faster service it would rectify this issue?

Anyway, I have an old DOCSIS 2.0 Motorola Surfboard modem, and I understand that a 3.0 would have better speed consistently. I'm also considering upgrading to the Cox Premier 50 Mbit service which I think is only $12/mo difference.

Is there any sort of promotion where Cox can give me a DOCSIS 3.0 modem for upgrading to a faster tier? Or If I buy it myself, are there any service promotions for existing customers? We've been Cox customers for over 10+ years. I used to do customer support for U-Verse and we always had promos we could apply if the member simply asked for it. Anyway, just trying to offset the cost of a new $100 modem. Thanks in advance!

Promotions may be available however you would be better off speaking to your local sales about that. I'm not sure about any including modems at this time but there's no harm in asking.

That would be netflix throttling you. not a cox issue.

If its happening with both netflix and youtube it's probably not a throttling issue.

I had an experience where one computer would have choppy playback on youtube even with the buffer filled. Something about the browser and the video playback just had issues. Installed a different browser and it was fixed. It could also be due to an underpowerd computer and newer software/too much memory being used. If you have more than one computer and its happening on them all then you may see it being a provider issue.

If you have a friend with a laptop have them watch something at their place and then bring the laptop over and try it out on your connection and see if the results are the same. . . you can also download a Live CD of Ubuntu and boot from it. If it works with no problems on youtube then I don't see it being an issue with your bandwidth but your hardware or software.

Just go buy the DOCSIS 3 modem, you will not regret it. I had all kinds of issues when i had a DOCSIS 2 modem with streaming and downloading, i'm assuming the new nodes they're using just do not handle DOCSIS 2 well anymore, so the channels get easily overloaded.

Once i upgraded to DOCSIS 3, i went from 1-2Mbps max down during the day to 60+ regularly.

It's not that they don't handle DOCSIS 2 well, it's that the DOCSIS 2 portions of their network are overloaded. DOCSIS 3 was designed for greater scalability and to resolve the lack of capacity resulting in the overload. Other than the lowest cable tiers of 10Mbps or lower everything else should be utilizing a DOCSIS 3 modem.

Currently I have a Motorola SB5120.
You can view my logfile here: »sprunge.us/HRYI
I noticed every time my internet goes down, I am no longer able to reach the modem at 192.168.100.1. After it comes back online it says "INITIALIZATION COMPLETE - MODEM IS OPERATIONAL" in the log file. That's what makes me think its a modem problem.

I spoke with a Cox rep and there were no promos for either a modem or the premier service. the only promos they had is if I added additional Cox services like phone which I wasn't interested in so I took the plunge and ordered a SB6141. That reminds me I need to order some CAT7 cables as I have a gigabit router too.

So when I get the modem I guess I need to call Cox tech support and give them my new MAC address? Also I think I should remind them to change the account code from docsis2 to docsis3 or something?

When you call them to activate the new modem they ask you the model number along with the mac and serial number, so the system knows it's a docsis 3 modem. That is all I did when I got my docsis 3 modem and I have the bonded channels on the modem as I should.

The messages "No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out" AFAIK indicate a problem on the Cox side of things; with their network. The problem isn't with the modem.

You don't need Cat6 cables. Cat5e is fine and what is necessary for GigE.

Legacy DOCSIS 2.0 devices (no longer recommended)

Cox recommends all customers use a DOCSIS 3.0 device from the list above.

There are a limited number of DOCSIS 2.0 devices that will continue to work on the Cox network, but if you are on Preferred, Premier, Premier Plus (where available) or the Ultimate tier, Cox strongly recommends that you upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 device for the best consistent speed experience. Future speed increases may not be achievable

Even cat5e will run gigE in short distances.. highly doubt you'll exceed those limits in a home.

Cat6 is plentiful and cheap if you really want to upgrade and will be more than enough.

Short distances being 100 meters, exactly the same as Cat6.

Yes, but ... thinner conductors and more temperamental. Make sure you get the correct plugs & jacks and follow the installation guidelines on cable bends or you'll have problems.

I received my new DOCSIS3 modem 2 days ago and I'm happy to say I am not getting any service interruptions anymore! I no longer get the line about initializing in the log files over and over. matter of fact the log file hasn't been updated since these last two lines:

When activating the new modem, I asked the Cox Agent to upgrade me from Preferred to Premium, but two days later I'm still not seeing any speed increase. Originally she said I would see the speed increase immediately but after 10 minutes of troubleshooting having me reboot my computer, bypass my router and plug it directly to the modem etc, she gave up and said it would take longer for the system to update to the new speed. I did point out that I was previously using a docsis2 and just now upgraded to docsis3 if there was any sort of accounting code she needed to change but she just confirmed that she upgraded me to the preferred tier.

I'm not sure how to read this signal data from my new modem but it says:

The signal levels you're showing are right on the cliff being in the -10 range so that may require further attention should you have issues. Downstream levels between -10 and +10 are considered acceptable, the closer to 0 the better.

$38 for this Cisco DCP3010 refurb. Looks brand new. Works like a charm. HUGE speed increase on my 25Mb tier plan.

Good news, after some rejigging in my cable cabinet (whatever you call it) I got the downstream signal levels to +4 dBmV and the upstream is 40 dBmV.

Also after the sales dept corrected the service code on my account my speedtest is upwards of 70 Mbit now!
