Perfect pings!

I did not test my connection for at least a week on speedtest.net (yes it's not the best site) but I would always have ping in range of 17-19

now I see as low as 4 ping I wonder if verizon improved something or just speedtest servers?

Re: Perfect pings!

I would also add that from my graphs to various destinations. Mos have eased out in the last 3 days with the exception of Road Runner and certain level 3 destinations like their DNS servers. Those still have high loss and high latency every night.

Are you guys using internet explorer by any chance? I saw often that many people with IE had the 0 ping bug. I tried all New York servers 4 is the lowest I get , to New Jersey I get 6 ping which is awesome!

I can get low pings like the rest of you at 8am on a weekday but I'd like to see the same speed/latency test from 7-11pm, goes right in the sh!tter

Has anyone actually heard anything positive from Verizon in regards to their crap ping and packet loss post 7pm?

Speedtest.net is kinda horrible for measuring latency but yeah FIOS has been by far the best latency connection I have ever had:

root@dekabutsu: 06:14 PM :~# ping 4.2.2.3
PING 4.2.2.3 (4.2.2.3) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 4.2.2.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=252 time=2.55 ms
64 bytes from 4.2.2.3: icmp_seq=2 ttl=252 time=2.54 ms
64 bytes from 4.2.2.3: icmp_seq=3 ttl=252 time=2.59 ms
64 bytes from 4.2.2.3: icmp_seq=4 ttl=252 time=2.61 ms
^C
--- 4.2.2.3 ping statistics ---

It's impossible to have zero ms pings. Even in a small closed network you should see about 1 ms or so. Best I've ever seen with Speedtest is 10 ms.

Does the upload and/or download activity level on your service increase at about 7pm?

Hi NOYB,

I think I'm in the same boat as serge87. Nothing changes within my house at 7pm. It appears to be an issue at the Philly/NYC hop.

Pings are still pretty bad for me. I am pinging around 50ms to Syracuse, NY which is at most 25 miles away from my location. Still getting ping spikes in the evening, after 8PM precisely. I have to call Verizon to resolve a billing issue so I am going to be complaining about poor service.

Cacti
Do a tracert to 8.8.8.8 for example. Try all different networks. You will start to notice some have bad routing and others dont. Bad meaning most likely congested, even if its on the Verizon side.

But as for patt2k, good luck with Cacti, I see now why people dont post their configs or really help online - it will take you days to get it running and weeks to figure out certain plugins. but once its all working, its pretty sweet. You can go for that option, someone might be able to help you, or someone might even charge a few $/month to do it all and host it all for you even.

As you can see, almost everything for me at last, is now almost steady.

A week or more ago and every single destination (except hop 1) would have some kind of increase randomly during the evening hours. yes even my second hop was going crazy for a while.

Some Physics people need to hop into this conversation because depending on distance to your test site, 0 ms pings wont make much sense.

I think the ping time is rounded down.

I get 0ms using internet explorer but firefox gets about 3 to 4 ms which is more accurate for a local server. Must just be a glitch with something cause we know 0 ms is impossible

12:18 AM I suppose Cable would slow down at this point with congested node this is the time when all people watch pr0n , seems good right here. Hope you can get it resolved.

I used waterfox Ver 18.0.1 on that speed test I took, I haven't tried IE 10 yet.
