1 edit | [IL] 500+ ms ping times I've restarted the modem, router, pc, etc.....and I'm still seeing 500+ ms ping times with slow d/l speeds.
Is mediacom having problems?
edit:
laptop is running fine. checked desktop for viruses and it's clean...according to malwarebytes and avast. any ideas? |

| Reboot in safe modem, keep pushing F8 before you see the Windows logo and choose Safe Mode with Networking and try it. If your speed and latency are fine then you most likely have a software issue. -- I speak for myself, not my employer. |

| reply to poppster I've asked MediacomChad, my local TOS, and on mediacomcable.com forum for about 2 months about a fix with no clear resolve as of yet. Last 2 days it's gotten much worse. Speed shows good, but latency is terrible.
I'm finding packet loss, and high latency on every tracert I run at various hops, a couple are owned by Mediacom, and the rest are owned by AT&T. |

 | it appears you have some other issue. The OP stated his laptop was fine. -- I speak for myself, not my employer. |

| Which is why I keep trying to isolate the problem. I'm about to run out of things to check, lol.
Question though, if your IP changes from the older 173.XX.XXX.XX, to the newer 50.XX.XXX.XX lot, doesn't that change your routing? after mine switched I've had this very noticeable increase in latency.
Thanks. |

| reply to poppster great idea Anonymous . I've disabled Zonealarm firewall, and my pings are at 50ms again.......
With ZA I'm seeing major packet loss and high ping times. -- What else would you do? -- There is hope! |
|
 | reply to bulletsam It changes things for sure. The only way to change your IP is to change the device hooked up to the modem (or spoof MAC). -- I speak for myself, not my employer. |
|
 | reply to poppster Try resetting to default settings for your firewall and if that doesn't work maybe you should try reinstalling your ZA. -- I speak for myself, not my employer. |

poppsterTell the truth and then run.Premium join:2003-12-23 Midwest kudos:1 | without za
im un-installing it. Any good alternatives? |
|
 | reply to poppster A good NAT router with DMZ and port forwarding disabled makes a ok firewall. If you want a good firewall that won't kill your networking, you need to invest in a hardware firewall. |
|
 | reply to poppster You really don't need a firewall just a good AV/Spyware app. |
