| Nearly Every NYC Crime Involves Computers, Says Manhattan DA »www.theepochtimes.com/n2/united-···692.html from »yro.slashdot.org/story/13/03/03/···attan-da
"... Think twice next time you need money from a curbside ATM machine, or decide to pay for a meal with a credit card. Prosecutions for cybercrime and identity theft in Manhattan have increased by 50 percent in the last five years, and criminals are rigging ATM machines and scanning your credit cards when youre not looking..." -- Ant @ AQFL.net and AntFarm.ma.cx. | Are there really statistics to back up the Manhattan DA's claim that almost every NYC crime has a cyber element? And that it isn't just Manhattan, but throughout the country?
And did you see this statement: "The city is getting help from the Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, local businesses, and others. This system of cooperation was actually set up in 2001 when President George W. Bush signed the PATRIOT Act into law."
So was this a conference to demonstrate why they'll soon be using new surveillance techniques? I wonder... |

druggies will still knock off 7-11s, a Meth head is not going to setup a complex computer crime to make money to buy their next high when they can walk into a shop with a 9mm and make them empty the drawer. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

 | reply to heels_fan said by heels_fan:So I take it that NYC is going to ban computers now? Doubt it. They're too busy banning things that affect more people, like salt, soft drinks, living space, etc.
But they'll use it as a rationale for snooping without a warrant. The city's full of terrorists, don't you know. |
