having trouble getting vcenter.

i have 54 days left and i have not put in the free limited license. all this time i thought it was called vcenter, but i cant seem to find what i think is the vcenter i need.

i am looking to setup clustering.

thanks

Alright, so you are running ESXi on some some server, correct, and can connect to it using a vSphere client?

To cluster multiple ESXi machines with a non-free license (as in after 60 days clustering won't work), you'll need vCenter. You should be able to download it here: »my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details···-510B-EN

thanks, i will try that. what i find very odd, or funny, is that there are two places i have seen that have referenced vcenter. 1, when i navigate to the esxi host, there is a link to download vcenter and 2, in vsphere, there is a link to use vcenter server. both take me here...

»my.vmware.com/web/vmware/downloads

which doesnt have the link/program you posted. why do they do this....i have no idea?

You're going to want 5.1.0b. You can run vCenter within a VM on your ESXi machine if you want then connect your ESXi box to your vCenter server (the attached pic is not from my vCenter login otherwise you'd see datacenters, etc).

While I have not yet setup a vCenter server (only esxi hosts) (but might very soon) I would think you'd not want to put the management server on a vm hosted by what it's managing.

I'm thinking along the lines of from a cold boot if all VM's are set not to auto power on, doesn't vCenter lock out the vShpere client from directly connecting to the hosts?

please correct me if wrong.

You can still access the hosts with the vsphere client and the root logon info if the vcenter server is down.

Ok what what functions are lost when the vcenter is down?

I'm thinking of where to place our vcenter (assuming we'll have one at our site and not use one from another site.)

So I guess it'll ether be on a VM or on the crazy over powered backup server (dual 2.5GHz /HT 6 core with 32GB ram and I'm told the software is lighter weight than backup exec)

It isn't ideal but I don't have a second HP Proliant at my house (yet) or another server to run vcenter from.

In our production environment we have dedicated vcenter server machines.

Thing like vMotion, Storage vMotion, the ability to see all VMs on all hosts. Most put it on a VM.

I have my vcenter running as a VM. If your going to down one of the hosts just migrate it over to the other.

It really doesn't need to be that beefy of a machine, my guest for vcenter has 2 processor cores and 4GB of memory.

Which download would you recommend? the ISO or the OVF/OVA?

In reference to the vCenter installation? The ISO and do it manually.

I just finished vCenter install #4 today and it was the first day that I used his scripts/my own custom scripts to set it up. Because I know how the damn thing works from installs 1-3, I knew how to troubleshoot problems along the way (your are almost guaranteed to have install problems... not enough QA on this release).

IMO, I would consider the vCenter OVA "lagniappe" and, although cool and supposedly easy to setup, I like to do it the "hard way" so I know what exactly is going in and what exactly is coming out.

ISO. The appliance does not include Update Manager.

Just fire up a windows server and install off the ISO. I have yet to get vCenter to run on Server 2012 though so stick with 2008 R2.

...and SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2. I don't think SQL Server 2012 is supported yet either.

For vCenter? SQL (or another database) is needed. A database is required for vCenter, VUM, and SSO.

right (or another database), but you only said SQL making it seem as if that was the only option.

Thanks
I think I'll put it on the VM thats planned to take over for WSUS (only 2 hosts so I think it'll have plenty of resources)

Thanks this word nicely

Now I've enabled HA on our pair of hosts

Re: HW Verify: ESXi at home...

1) The SSD could be beneficial if you think you're going to be running something with heavy disk IO. With lots of VMs, the disk can be a major bottleneck.

2) You can run VCenter Server inside the ESX host it manages just fine. Just don't try to use that VM for much else. It consumes a ton of ports. I've learned first-hand that it will NOT easily share roles with a domain controller, nor IIS. If something goes wrong you can just connect to the ESX host to get the VCenter VM going again.

3) I got it working with a Dell T1600's onboard NIC. I had to patch the CD image with a driver.
