[Scam] Facebook's new fee

It's come to my attention that there now a $5.00 fee to send a stranger a message? How does this prevent spam? I don't understand - why does a billion dollar company who said there will not be a fee to join or use their services?

I'm not a facebook member, so I can't comment on whether this is fair.

Spam is a very ineffective way of advertising. It works because it is dirt cheap. Send out a few zillion spam message, and that costs so little that if only one person in 100,000 responds you can still drum up business.

The $5.00 fee will discourage spam because it is not dirt cheap. There are more effective ways of spending $5.00.
