Have you considered foregoing the car completely? Both of those destinations have a fantastic public transit infrastructure.

Toronto's public transit is FAR fron fantastic... It's functional, at best. There's only two subway lines (A north-south "U" and a east-west line midtown)... The rest is buses or streetcars.

That said - most everything a tourist would want to do (CN Town, Royal Ontario Musem, NHL rink and MLB stadium, Art Gallery of Ontario, Eaton's Centre, etc) are within pretty easy walking distance, or accessible from the subway.

Unless you're planning on driving TO Toronto, I'd say you could easily get to where you wanted to go without a car... Unless you had a non-downtown core destination in mind.

NYC - I drive there as little as possible - Taxis and subway - parking is insane.
