Re: Dell Days of Deals is back

Okay I will bite, why get this U24, if the new models have much better specs. Specifically this monitor seems to have it all, what is it missing that the new ones will ahve that Ishould hold out for.

The higher specs are the the colour gamut. The new ones cover something like 99% of AdobeRGB and the current is less. It really only matters for higher end photo editing or maybe video editing.

On the consumer sale the Canon PowerShot SX160 IS is on for $109, I cannot find it for that price even on a US site with a quick search. Decent little camera.

For anyone who's interested, the Vostro 3560 15.6" laptop is available for $429. Core i3, Windows 7 Pro 64 bits, 4 GB memory, 500 GB HD. It's about $70-$100 more than the similar deal they had a few months ago (and the screen is still to big for me ), but it might be just right for someone else out there.

EDIT: Just found out its regular price is $449, so you're only saving $20. It would have been better if the price was under $400 like it was once before.

Naw, screen is too small. I cannot stand my 15 inch work laptop.

Continuing the netbook discussion (we have an older model and want to replace). Im wondering if a windows 8 tablet is a better way to go vice netbook. The main requirements are..... ability to wifi to network at home. The ability to view PDF files, MS Office files and to type word documents and perhaps work in powerpoint presentations. Pretty basic stuff. Obviously the light and portable aspect is there. (assuming browsing will be part of the package).

You'll pay twice the cost for much less than half the capabilities. Unless you don't need a keyboard, the netbook will always be a better value than a tablet.

Ultrabooks were announced in 2011... they're old news now. Pretty successful, sure, but old news. They're Intel's version of the Macbook air.

That's a good price. These sorts of repeaters are hit-or-miss as to how well they work in any specific situation. This unit supports all the common standards and security protocols but I noticed in the comments on Amazon that it lacks MAC address filtering. Won't matter to most but some use that feature.

In about a year from now, they'll be the new "Netbook."

I highly doubt that. Netbooks were phased out because of the severe compromises they made in terms of tiny screens, keyboards, and very slow hardware. The last point was addressed after a few generations of chips, when we could put ULV processors in something the size/weight of a Netbook, but the screen/keyboard issue remained. So they too the concept of the Netbook, gave it a normal sized screen and keyboard, and used the ULV chipsets to keep the same size/weight (or less, infact, the early EeePCs weighed way more than a modern 13" ultrabook).

Ultrabooks, for most people, don't make any compromises apart from cost. They have full-sized screens (11"-15", although I think 13" is the sweetspot between weight and usability), full-sized keyboards, and good enough performance for most tasks (a modern dual-core Ivy Bridge ULV processor is pretty darned fast, lower clockspeed or not). In fact, because one of the requirements for an Ultrabook is that it use only solid-state storage, they often end up feeling faster than full-sized notebooks; the SSD improves things more than the slightly slower CPU slows things. You also normally get enough connection options for most peoples' needs.

If anything, Ultrabooks seem likely to mostly replace full-sized notebooks. There will always be the case for the very cheap and very fast notebooks, but Ultrabooks will probably capture a big chunk of the middle of the market. Costs will come down a bit ($1000ish is the current entry-price for an Ultrabook), and performance will go up a bit to eat into the higher-end segment.

Asus has been doing some decent work with their Ultrabook-like devices, more specifically the Core i3 X202 series which can now be found for $550. I'm waiting for prices to come down a bit more before considering any of them though. That, and a device with an edge that isn't sharp enough to cut baloney.

Lenovo is another contender. In any case, I do need a compact device in the 11.6" screen range size. It's why I've kept my 10" Asus netbook for so long, even installing a SSD in it. I don't feel like I'm carrying a brick with me.

Hmm. Vostro 2420 with 14" screen, Core i3, Win 7 Pro 64 bits, 4 GB memory and 320 GB HD for $369. They even have an Ubuntu configuration for $299.

Not for me, but definitely for someone else at that price.

There are plenty of 11"-12" ultrabooks, though. I'd also say that when you start talking about 11"+, that's not really a netbook anymore.

The first netbook had a 7" screen, then they had some 8.9" models. 10" is still netbook-ish, but the 12" ones, well, that's as big as a normal thin-and-light was back then...

When netbooks originally came out there was a decent gap in price between them and laptops. Now there are cheap laptops all the way down to netbook prices.

Business deal: Vostro 2420 $299 - i3-2348M, UBUNTU Linux, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, 14" 720p LCD - $70 more for model with Windows 7 Pro

Those cheap "laptops" use the same low cost/low power/low performance CPUs as Netbooks, usually AMD C/E series or whatever their successors are now. They may have a 15" screen, but for all intents and purposes they are just big netbooks.

Has anyone ordered anything from the Dell Days of Deals this go around and seen any issues with order fulfillment?

I ordered the D-link 506L when it was offered at $29.99 (March 5 IIRC) and so far the Order is saying that the Ship date is March 8, 2013 but the Order status is marked as "Processing"

Very strange because when I ordered the touch screen monitor last year, the thing shipped to me even before the estimated ship date.

Curious.

My last order from Dell has still not passed processing, that was December. It arrived in three days.
