Re: [Cable] NEW RATES - Cogeco

Hey Marc,

I currently have Cogeco (30 down/2up/175GB). Will the upload rate remain at 2Mbps or is it lowered for Teksavvy?

I called in today, it doesn't look like Teksavvy is available in my area yet, but I do look forward to it when it is

Whatever Cogeco's retail speeds are will be what Teksavvy sells.

In that case there is a 14mbps tier (at this time) from Cogeco but Teksavvy only has 6, 10, 20, etc.

Turbo 14 is no longer available for new installs in areas that have been upgraded to D3. Turbo 20 replaced it. Anyone with a D2 modem that has Turbo 14 is grandfathered.

Will Teksavvy try to compete a little bit better with Starts rates for Cogeco? They are quite a bit cheaper for the higher speeds.

If we change anything it will be when we go live with things late next week most likely.

I currently have DSL 25 package and would like to switch to Teksavvy Cogeco plan as I am in Burlington when it comes available. Will there be any charges for switching services? I'm hoping just the modem purchase?

The differences now are much smaller
If you have Cogeco Internet 30 in a bundle then it's about $ 8 cheaper than Teksavvy
For an extra $8 you get 25GB and unlimited between 2 and 8

For the average user who wants the 30 speed Cogeco looks better.

That's outdated info.

They just announced new packages which begin on Monday.

Some lower caps and some higher prices.

Pretty sure the cap limits on Cogeco retail were released today. They're not as high as you posted.

Some plans did recieve updates not too long ago but these new numbers I got from the Cogeco forums. Apparently these are newish emails being sent out and the caps won't become active until April 1st.

Without official word I posted them as rumours.

I added the source to my other post.

You're right, got confused with the email I saw today with what is on the website now.

Kind of really throws a wrench into the TPIA providers, that's for sure.

per TSI_Martin, this may change. There is no unlimited between 2 & * for cable. It's for DSL only (even though they stated it for cable in the forums).

See: »Re: [Cable] NEW RATES - Vidéotron

He's more or less saying that if you buy their packages now expecting it to become unlimited, then too bad for you since it's not written in stone.

So until it's on their site, there is no unlimited, per TSI Martin.

That might be a Videotron restriction.

Edit:
Actually I believe its more of a warning, telling people not to assume the time is currently unlimited.

The plans are not yet active, so only DSL has the 2-8am window, but once the new cable plans are active all services will have the unlimited window.

Dunno. He refers to "Cable". Not specifically only Videotton cable. In addition he states the unlimited is for DSL *only*.

So it seems to me it applies to all cable if he stated unlimited is for DSL only.

Re: [Cable] NEW RATES - Cogeco

Hi, I have a student house and I am looking to switch from Cogeco to TekSavvy, if I select the 20Mbps 300Gig package and the renters happen to go over the 300Gig usage will it automatically bump me up to the unlimited package (and price) for that month or will there be crazy overage fees?

Just wondering if I should go straight for the unlimited package to be safe, or stick with the 300 and keep more money in my wallet.

Cheers

Big slap to the face of TSI? Cogeco just sent out an email that they will be (significantly in some cases) raises caps for all users soon....So much for their capacity costs being so high that they can just double their residential users caps at no cost....

New ONTARIO Plans - Cogeco Network

NOW REVISED to INCLUDE the LATEST TSI (MARCH 9th) ESTIMATES :

= = = = = = =

ShetiPhian, glad you did this - Saved me some legwork.

However, to make it more complete, let me add :

MODEMs
START charges an extra $5 plus tax for modem rental, or supports certain models if you own one already.
Cogeco includes one in their service price.
TSI - Likely extra, as before for other cable - Marc, March 9th commented this.

ACTIVATION
START usually charges $50 to setup cable Internet, and that includes a tech visiting, but it's FREE if transferring from an active service at the same jack from Cogeco or from another TPIA IISP, as long as no tech visit is needed.
Cogeco usually charges $30 to setup cable Internet, and that includes a tech visiting.
TSI ? - The next quote is from a TSI-Cogeco ATPIA Beta Tester, and the new policy on this is not set yet.

said by ShetiPhian:

my invoice : $44.95 Activation Fee, -$20.00 Activation Discount (for buying the modem) - Belleville, Cogeco-Land, coming from TSI DSL

QUEBEC
No need to show cap info (simpler chart) as no A-TPIA is active there yet, AFAIK.

GRANDFATHERING
START supports it for customers already on all of their earlier discontinued plans, but of course if a customer chooses to switch to a newer plan, they cannot switch back.
TSI would only have existing Cogeco customers in Chatham, and I'm not sure what their plans are for THEM - Anybody know ?

USAGE
Cogeco counts BOTH downloads and uploads, AFAIK, and Cogeco has NO free period.

UNIQUE PLANS
START has chosen to avoid the 10Mbps tier at this time.
Cogeco only offers 14Mbps to their own retail customers (not thru TPIA IISPs), and only to areas where that is the highest available speed, until they finish their upgrades of those areas.
