| Anyone want to Slow there usage? I am,since I have just 10 gigs a month to burn it can go fast on some pages ,So I got some software called Traffic Shaper XP that can actually slow my LAN to almost dial up If i want it to.
I know most people its faster the better but those 10 gigs can go fast,If they are counted..LOL |
|
 | I found another one, NetBalancer Free, that works with Windows 7 and 8 too.
It definitely slows the speed of streaming video reported by Windows Task Manager, but I will have to use it some more to determine if it reduces the usage recorded by the Wildblue FAP meter. I hope this will fix the mess Wildblue/Exede created with high speeds and low usage caps. -- Wildblue Value Pack, beam 31, Riverside gateway |

| Thanks and yes it is a problem with the fast speed they have,You can eat up bandwidth in no time.So far I am very pleased with what Traffic Shaper XP can do.I can slow it down to almost dialup speed for casual usage when not in a hurry.

 | Some of the content providers (Netflix for one, I am told) increase the resolution for fast connections. I think bandwidth limiting is totally unnecessary for routine browsing unless you do a lot of streaming video. I have a 10G cap but rarely use more than 5-6G. Using adblock on your browser can reduce usage a bit.
Some routers have a function that can limit speed for specified domains. I think it is called QSP...haven't had to mess with it so I can't comment on how well it works. |

 | Adblock can save a ton of data. Those flash video ads can devour more data than the webpage you visited itself. |

 | No way id lower the res the lowest setting is so crappy its not funny so pixelated. If you got use that sucky settings then why stream at all ?
I mean it's not enjoyable when the picture is so shitty, And to anyone who enjoy netflixs on the lowest settings is nuts or desperate to stream. |

 | reply to RandyH I saw some info on the WB forum that indicates I was in error suggesting "adblock" as a means to reduce bandwidth usage...the usage is still charged but it doesn't slow up your browser. The reasons are above my paygrade. On the other hand, the plugin "NoScript" will reduce your usage if you let it. |
|
 | When an URL is requested, AcceleNet Server fetches total page request, and sends it to your computer. Adblock just kepts it out of your sight.
Save a page on your desktop, and look into that page's folder; there you will see those ads.
Flashblock (FireFox extension) will prevent videos from running, btw |

wm4bama join:2012-05-10 Goodwater, AL | The real byte-saver add-on for your browser is "FlashBlock"...it will keep embedded web page video from streaming unless you click the icon to allow it..
As stated, AdBlock makes a neater page display but does not save any usage...AcceleNet sends all of that page and the bytes are already counted before your browser "blocks" the ads coming from the modem.
NoScript will also block most flash videos but it has too many hoops to go through until you authorize scripts on the web sites you really want scripts to run...
FlashBlock is the better choice. -- Exede12, ViaSat-1, beam 342, Albuquerque Gateway, Denver AcceleNet servers |

 | Adblock blocks HTTP GET requests. While it may be less effective than it would be on other connections because AccelNet is junk, it will still block flash video ads from loading. Unlike flashblock, it will also stops html5 video ads from loading. |
|
 | reply to RandyH After having AdBlock installed for years, it definitely stops streaming video preventing it from being counted on the usage meter. It blocks images, but the gateway still loads them adding to the usage meter. This is because the gateway does not prefetch streaming video. -- Wildblue Value Pack, beam 31, Riverside gateway |
