| Another shock bill $22K from Fido AKA Rogers The classic shock bill, this time from Fido....
quote: When I heard $22,000 and my son happened to hear $22,000, he went into a fetal position and was crying. It was just mind boggling for him, said Matt Buie, who has an account with Fido, which is owned by Rogers.

| reply to technocar2 In this case, the guy turned off data roaming and then his son turned it back on. He knew what he was getting into. I think it's very reasonable for them to expect him to pay $500 instead of the $22k.
That said, roaming rates should be regulated to actually reflect costs. -- Tom |

 | reply to technocar2 Just recently my nephew incurred a $475 bill on his mother-approved smartphone when he went out of the country and used roaming internet in said country. He is only 11 years old. The idiot mother paid the bill to Rogers. |

You'd be surprised at how many people just assume roaming is included in their package, and have no clue they can buy local SIMs even if they currently carry an unlocked device. |

Someone at his age probably thinks the internet magically flows through the phone for free via fairy dust. If you read the article, once the child overheard it ended up costing dad $22 000 he was extremely distraught, and I'm sure he won't be doing that again. |

PaoloMr. Wireless join:2004-05-29 canada | EXACTLY, so people who dont know, probaly WONT CARE if they disable airport mode or airplane or what ever that doo hickey thing a ma bob mode is called, and wont tell you about it neither. as a proper parent, why risk that? i would have either taken out the sim card, or left the i phone at home and brought the ipod touch for my baby to play with. -- Happiness is like peeing your pants... | reply to Dones She is an idiot.
What does a kid that age need a cell for.
And the dad in this story is a moron also and they should make him pay the 22k.
Your on Vacation leave the electronics at home. And if you have to leave the kid in a room because you are too lazy to hang around with him why even bring him on vacation?
Also ever heard of a laptop and Wifi.
Parents can no longer get away with being techno dinosaurs these days or else your children make you pay for it. |

It's not his phone, it was the parents.
No, they shouldn't make him pay the 22k.
You're telling me not to bring my phone to Mexico? 22k is a small price to pay if my life is on the line.
Yeah, good idea. Let me bring my Macbook to Mexico and if I somehow misplace it, the nice people of Mexico with return it.
Not everyone knows how to disable cellular data and they might have wanted to make calls or text in Mexico.
Everyone here is bashing the parents when it's the carriers that should get the hate. They should put a block on your bill before something like this can happen. |

And since when did 700MB start costing $22000??? Are the laws of physics different in Mexico...if anything it shouldn't have cost more than $60 plus a mark up totalling $75...yet these carriers think 700MB in Mexico is worth $22000.
People blaming the parents have totally lost the grip on reality...
If a person from Pakistan were to use 700MB in Mexico he wouldn't pay more than $73CAD for 700MB to his carrier in Pakistan. Why does Rogers think they can charge $22000CAD when the fair price is $73. The person from Pakistan doesn't even have to add any spacial packages before he makes a trip to Mexico, he just goes there...uses 700MB knowing that when he goes back he will not have a $22000 bill waiting for him, instead he will pay $73 and a bit of haggling at the local telecom shop and they might just lower it $25. I rest my case... |

 | Bell roaming is $6 per meg. For 700 that's $4,200 |

elitefx join:2011-02-14 London, ON kudos:1 | Saw on Lang and OLeary last nite that a lot of Canadian business folk buy an American data plan for their phones and, compared to Rogers etc., roaming rates are "almost free" in Canada, US and Mexico. That's according to Uncle Kevin anyway. |
