LAN Party Suggestions

I'm going to be hosting a LAN party this spring and I'm looking for suggestions of games.

Ideally, I'm looking for a multitude of games to jump between. I'm looking for games that have one or more qualities:

Cheap or Free
Large co-op: 8-16 players
Not too brutal on most computers
Online play is ok.

So far, I've thought of:
Warcraft3-DOTA - Could keep everything contained on a share on a NAS device and have people copy it over.
Mech Warrior Online - 8 players max.

Someone had suggested Serious Sam 3 for the massive co-op. I haven't checked it out yet.

I have a 75/35 FIOS connection on a Gig ethernet. I can probably handle most anything at the network/Internet and be fine.

FPS's and RTS's sound good. What about Torchlight 2?

Thanks for the UT suggestion.

TF2 is free as well. I can add that to the list.

Some throwbacks that the crowd may enjoy:

Battlefield 2/1942/2142
Counterstrike 1.6/Source/etc
Command & Conquer Series
Tribes Series
Rainbow 6 Series

Isn't a LAN party, by definition, a throwback thing so shouldn't the games be as well? I think the last LAN party I went to.....a lonnnng time ago we played Unreal Tournament and Quake.

I do miss it though. Damn those were fun. Dragging your rig around was not. Getting all that shit set up was not. But they were good times once the fragging started.

That game is such a pile of shit. I uninstalled almost immediately. Luckily it was a free Steam weekend and not a an actual purchase.

Well, it was no Duke Nukem Forever. I played with a few friends for a few weeks. Wasn't that bad...

ME3 and BF3 are two more current games that have great coop/MP...

And I'd be remiss not to mention CS:S and Natural Selection, or possibly the new CS and NS2.

Hell, if you really want a throw-back... Jedi Knight II!

And of course UT2K4.

L4D2 or even the original 1
no more room in hell(a source mod)
source forts(nother source mod)
tf2.
unreal tournament 2004(my personal favorite of the series) or the original one(both available on gog for $10, and with no drm one copy can be used for the entire party).
quake 3
any of the counter strike games
half life/HL2 death match
killing floor(ether the one on steam or the original mod for ut2k4)
the starwars mod for ut2k4.
duke nukem 3d(also on gog, and has a source port that gives it a full openGL 3D world, just google duke hrp) has duke match,
BF3
borderlands 2
jedi knight 2.
DOOM, via zandronum, free open source, it has death match and co-op and works with most and wad be it the original or mods, even chex quest(look it up if you dont know what it is, you'll be happy you did, as well as wolf 3D even if you want),
the first 2 quake games I guess.
Tribes ascend
and maybe minecraft.

Being a LAN party I would lean towards some of the older games. Plus their pretty much guaranteed to work on any machine now a days.

Team Fortress classic
Half-Life Deathmatch
Counter strike
Quake series
Unreal Tournament Series

There was also an old Star Wars game that we used to play in our LAN's but I forget the name. I think it was Jedi Academy or something along those lines.

Those of us who showed up for someone's birthday party have already done that.
