Re: LogMeIn: Limited to 10 Free computers (Alternatives?) said by rugby:We've used Central for a year now and it's been well worth the $300. I still have mixed feelings about it. Comparing Central to non-Central today, yes it is worth $300. But they didn't actually add anything new when they released Central, they just moved things you used to be able to do without it to a paid subscription option. (grouping computers for example)
Much like they aren't adding any new features to the free client, they are just going to start limiting how many you can have. I can't object to a company wanting to make money, but it does feel like they are turning their backs on existing customers. A pay-per-block-of-10-free-accounts option would have been nice, for those existing customers who don't need Central or the features of Pro.
Or you know, maybe more than a one week notice of such a major change to a service that has been around for years. |

| reply to Camelot One said by Camelot One:Yes, due to this change, they are letting anyone who didn't previously have Central get it for $199.00 for the first year. It goes up to $299 per year after that, and it seems they are excluding existing Central users from getting the discount for this year. Even at $300 it would be less than $0.42 per PC per month. Not all that expensive for what you get. I don't understand the complaints. There is a service that performs so well that you have a connection to over 60 PC at your fingertips at any point of the day from any Internet connected device, saving you from even getting dressed to perform diagnostics or maintenance on a PC thousands of miles away and being asked to pay $.042 per month for that is enough to cause one to look elsewhere? (No I didn't take a breath or even pause) Perhaps it is not the great service you think it is. I guess I just don't see the issue. |

i am surprised they didnt let you grandfather your account. yeah, they want to make money, but pissing people off isnt a good way of doing that.
at some point i would have to add another computer, make me pay for it/upgrade at that point, it is bound to happen.
doesnt matter, they made up their mind. |

So far I've found people recommend ScreenConnect or TeamViewer. I used TeamViewer free before and have never tried ScreenConnect but plan to do the trial. Now having to go through the trials then manager approval-- not how I wanted to start off the year. |

My old job is still at version 6 and they can't connect if users upgrade their server versions. Also, FWIW, Central adds some features back to LogMeIn Free that have been removed over the years, like Remote Deployment and the ability to invite other users. The latter used to be part of LMI Free but is no longer available. The ability to group computers is also very useful. |

 | It is still possible to do a silent remote deploy LMI Free, but it takes some effort to setup the file. |

 | reply to mikefxu I had 40 machines on mine and got the message must pay now. So I will dump Logmein if that's the case and i've emailed them to complain. They couldn't even write back to me with a sale enquiry regarding moving up to pro, so they dont seem that with it. |

mikefxu join:2004-10-05 Titusville, FL | I just check the website and I got the same thing. I use LogMeIn Ignition (just an app instead of having to login to website) and it doesn't seem to be enforcing the 10 Free limitation yet.
Edit: Looks like they are just scaring you into pay now, still got some time.
quote: Your account will soon be limited to 10 Free computers.
To ensure that we can continue providing free service with LogMeIn Free and make meaningful improvements to it, we will be limiting the number of Free computers in all remote access accounts to 10. In order to have more than 10 Free computers in your account, youll need a paid subscription of LogMeIn Central. Central not only unlocks remote access for more than 10 computers, but it also gives you more power and control when managing them from one location.
To help ease the transition, we are extending a special offer to all users affected by this change. Take a free trial of Central now, or upgrade at the special rate of $199.00/year.
Please note: if you do not take action, the Free computers highlighted in your account will become inaccessible on 5/11/2013. Only 60 days left!

I have had unlimited machines since I started using logmein in 2006.
I just received my email stating that the buffet is over.
I can simply create additional accounts I suppose.

BEGIN---- For nearly a decade, LogMeIn Free has provided unlimited free remote access to users on as many computers as they wish. In order to ensure that we can continue providing this free service and make meaningful improvements to it, we will be limiting the number of accessible Free computers in all remote access accounts to 10. The good news is, this change will not affect the vast majority of our users who can continue to use the service free of charge.
But some users, like you, are affected by this change and need to know what happens next. In order to have more than 10 Free computers in your account, you'll need a paid subscription of LogMeIn Central. To help ease the transition, we are extending a special offer on Central for just $199/year. If you have 11 computers in your account, that's just $1.50 per month per computer, and the price per computer becomes lower the more you have in your account.
With Central, you get more functionality at an affordable rate to make your life easier. LogMeIn Central unlocks remote access for more than 10 computers and gives you more power and control when managing them from one location.
Group and sort your computers to locate and access them instantly Remotely deploy LogMeIn Free software Manage user access and set permissions to stay in control And much more
Should you choose not to upgrade, only the first 10 Free computers in your account, according to alphabetical order, will be shown as available. Other computers will not be deleted, but they will not be remotely accessible unless you unlock access by upgrading to Central. These changes will take effect in just a few weeks, so act now to take advantage of our special rate.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you for many years to come.
Sincerely, The LogMeIn Team

Dave i still havent gotten an email. did i pull the trigger early (i started making accounts for friends and family that had 4-5 PCs)?
i think the writing is on the wall, so i went ahead and did it.
i am going to miss using logmein ignition when helping family. now i will have to login to the website using their account. not a huge deal, but adds some steps... |

 | reply to mikefxu Am in same boat. Run 100+ desktops on logmein free. grace period for 30 days, then im limited to 10 free.
Used to use teamviewer, which I liked very much. Better than Logmein pro, but not free. Sold by technician seats, # of computers unlimited.
Also looking at Dameware, dont know if that will traverse NAT. Searching for remote control product comparisons when I ran across your post.

With 100+ desktops, my opinion is that unless they are all on the same domain, you would be a fool not to use Ignition and Central. Sure it will no longer be completely free, but at less than $2 per seat for the year, it wouldn't be worth the trouble of even installing something else. |

 | reply to mikefxu A flavor of VNC and a little routing/firewall knowledge goes a long way. Won't catch me paying for any of this. Even if VNC isn't "optimal". |

Even if VNC isn't "optimal". i was like this, too, until i had some family members that had one of those all in one home routers that they had no clue what the password was. over the phone, i am not looking to do add onto the issues i have.
visit join.me, have them give me access, install logmein free and within minutes it is tied into my account. i was using ignition.
no matter your knowledge of vnc and firewalls, it doesnt come close to beating logmein free, sorry.
also, vnc wasnt working all that great with xp and certain programs (programs with transparency windows...vnc couldnt pull them up. the user saw something, i didnt (i was on the logmein side).
anyway, doesnt matter, it is what it is. |

| reply to mikefxu My account just switched over to the 10 computer limitation (actually goes into effect in 60 days). I e-mailed sales to see if they have something less "powerful" since I mainly support friends/family and I don't need the features of "central." I was told that central was the only option ($199-$299/year) which is too much for me.
Wonder if I can just use multiple e-mail accounts and spread my computers across them all..... -- This Space for Rent... |

mikefxu join:2004-10-05 Titusville, FL | I don't think they will have a way to stop you from making multiple accounts. They say the first 10 in your account alphabetically. I was wonder if you could just rename the ones after to move them up and just keep doing that. We get enough usage out of LogMeIn that we will probably pay for Central when we are forced to. I just wish they made Central Lite, $99 a year with the features that use to be free. I understand the business model, many companies use it, offer something for free until it becomes prolific then start charging. I would rather they offer a lower cost option for people that just want what was free before, we really don't need all the bells and whistles. |
