[DSL] Internet Only for $30/mo?

I received the attached advertisement in the mail today. From what I can tell it looks like an honest-to-god competitive offer for Internet Only service. The way I'm reading this is they're offering 12Mbps service for $40/mo with no contract. Plus all the crap fees etc that for some reason my Internet Only service from Mediacom doesn't seem to include. Anyone know how much I might expect the fees to add up to if I were to give this offer a try?

Did you read the fine print on Frontier's web site?

quote:
Limited time offer to new or current Frontier customers who subscribe to a qualifying package of Frontier residential local service with features, long distance and new High Speed Internet with speeds up to 6Mbps. Actual speeds may vary. Service subject to availability. $49.99 Internet installation fee waived for self install. Price guaranteed for 36 months. A $9.99 broadband processing fee upon disconnection of service applies. Double your speed offer not available in all areas. Taxes, governmental and other Frontier imposed surcharges apply. New Frontier customers are subject to credit approval. Frontier reserves the right to withdraw this promotional offer at any time. Other restrictions apply.

They ended up sending me 3 more of the same flier, but I decided to just stay with Mediacom for now. My impression is that Frontier doesn't have a great reputation for reliable and speedy service. If they were actually able to always deliver 12Mbps and not pile on a bunch of fees to the $40 then I would take them up on it, but I don't feel like taking the risk (especially since I'm led to believe that pre-data cap Mediacom accounts are grandfathered in). Would be nice to save the $25 a month difference though.

I can unequivocally tell you that in our area the bonded 12 m product consistently gives speed tests at 11.5/1.9 and pings in the 20's. I don't think ther are junk fee's. No modem charge either.

Don't consider their 12Mb plans immune from congestion. Those speeds are typical during the evening hours and have been for quite some time.

I'm on the 12Mb bonded "Ultra" plan and pay $60 a month for it. Not sure how close you are to Mansfield but I am about 30 minutes from Champaign/Urbana near Tuscola.

I must be missing something. The offer specifically say's "simply broadband, no home phone required". This is stand alone hsi service. Or are you talking specifically about the bonded 12m plan?

I wouldn't hesitate leaving Mediacom for Frontier.
Frontier has been awesome from day one in our area.
Mediacom on the other hand is terrible. High latency and they can't keep the internet online for more than a few days at a time.
