Re: [HD] FIOS Moving to MPEG-4 HD

This week, On Demand has a Watchathon and many things are free and it may be hard to check out the costs. However, normally if one goes to a premium channel and select a movie the info screen says Free with Subscription. Presumably if one doesn't subscribe to a particular premium channel, it'll cost. I have a package for all of the premiums, so I don't see a cost. Check it out next week if you don't have premium channels and see what movies/shows cost on Premium HD On Demand.

I believe the cost/ price shown is for the whole month of that premium service not just for that show or movie.

I have HD Preferred, but do NOT have HBO or MAX, so I tried a couple movies & specials from each service. ALL of them came up as FREE (no mention of "with sub") & I was able to watch them with no problems. (previously they had a charge) You have to sub to that particular premium channel to watch; you CAN'T buy these shows "a la carte".

Now on the Streampix tab, there didn't seem to be a lot of FREE preview stuff there. (I don't sub to it) About the only shows I found that were FREE, were Downton Abbey & 30 Rock; however, I believe these were ALSO available under the regular TV network tab.
Others I tried like Leave it to Beaver & Saturday Night Live (outside the current season) required buying Streampix.

Cypher, that's the impression I get. Comcast is saying FU, go get FiOS or a dish, we don't want you.

Huh??? did you actually read that link, that YOU posted?
ALL HBO/MAX HD feeds ARE in MPEG4 already, & have been since this 2008 posting!
But they ALSO have kept (duplicate) E/W primary feeds of HBO & MAX (4 channels total) in MPEG2 HD as well.
And of course they still have all of the SD feeds of these channels in MPEG2; there's no point in changing those to MPEG4 at this point...

No, I only posted it in case someone was interested.

Re: Still no new HD Channels in Latest Bill

At this point, since Comcast seems to have so many open QAMs in many areas, I'd think the missing channels are due to lack of demand and/or broadcaster pricing not bandwidth.

I'm almost wondering if they don't want the difference between an 860mhz and a 650mhz system to be too big... or if they think they will need more bandwidth for XoD or HSI. Or they're just clueless?

Maybe this article on the Light Reading Cable site today provides an explanation. It says that the MSOs will need to reserve at least 24MHz of bandwidth for DOCSIS 3.1 HSI's initial rollout phase.

They have moved them all in CT to the 1000's. They have similar lineups, but on my 650mhz system, we have 70 HD's, whereas my parents, on an 860mhz system have 110 HD's. I don't think they want to make the delta any bigger until they upgrade everyone to 860mhz, which seems to be taking them FOREVER.

They are already running 48mhz at least. My modem is locked onto 8 channels.

D3.1 uses OFDM so 24 MHz in addition to what they have now for D3.0/2.

But that seems a ways off. They must be holding back for other reasons.

Re: [HD] FIOS Moving to MPEG-4 HD

Remember though that Comcast has already launched metro ethernet in larger markets to carry the 305 Mbps tier.

I expect any broadband speed increases to gradually move to that network on fiber, independent from the current system.

Re: Still no new HD Channels in Latest Bill

They could get some modems out there while running D3 and then cut some of those channels over. I think that a great way to keep people moving on cable modem technology is to put like a 50GB/mo cap on modems that aren't up to date, and then allow unlimited for those that are.
