Generator Cord

Looking to make a longer generator cord using 10/4 SOOW. I was at Home Depot and they get $2.12 a foot for 10/4 SOOW 300V and $2.42 a foot for 10/4 SOOW 600V.

Cord will be about 25-30 ft. Which should I use, 300 volt or 600 volt.

Assuming your generator only outputs 240 volts, the 300 volt cord should be fine.

If you need to get new plug and receptacle, Ebay is the place. I got mine for several $ less that what HD or Lowes wanted, even with shipping added. Cheaper to get the 10/4 at HD, as shipping 25 ft is expensive.

Trick question. No one should buy overpriced cord from HD when they can go to a supply house and get it much cheaper.

Is the Platt Electrical Supply a better place to go than HD/Lowes?
I have seen them pop up recently.

A 300V cord is adequate for your needs, being each leg is only 120 volts anyway.

The difference between the 300v and 600v is the higher voltage rated cord has thicker insulation and of course, price.

Assuming supply houses will sell to unlicensed people... That's starting to become an issue around here...

Home Depot/Lowe's will gladly sell electrical components/wire/transfer switches/panels/circuit breakers/load centers/meter sockets/wire and cable/hardwired light fixtures/and anything electrical to unlicensed individuals.

I think Ace Hardware is the most expensive game in town when it comes to home improvement. They make Lowe's Depot look like a discount home center.

I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner. They are much better than broadcast TV.

I have not and will not cut the cord.

I said supply house; not big box retail... My local Nedco and Westburne won't sell to unlicensed people anymore. Don't know if its corporate policy; or just at the store level...

I thought Platt was a "web only" supplier. I've had an account with them for years. Sometimes, I can get stuff through Platt way cheaper than locally.
For example, vaults. I can get a vault + freight from Platt and it's still 50% less than the local price.

really, there is a nedco i frequent that has a storefront near here, they sell to pretty much anyone i hope they dont change! i know of a cable place that doesnt sell to the public, they want you to open an account, dont care if you are licenced or not.

just a hint, ive learned some auto parts places too sell cheaper if you have an account.

You are a little off there.

The 300V is SJOOW while the 600V is SOOW. I would personally go with the SOOW as it is thicker insulation, therefore more durable.

The local supply house here does but I know what you mean.
