 | [DSL] Truth on Newsgroup Servers Ok Here is the situation. I upgraded to 25/10 at a substantial cost $179.35. I have done speed tests and the line does test at 25down about 6up. Any of my downloads which are all through my news service provider Giganews max out at 1.7 megabit/sec. My downloads are done direct to my NAS a Synology DS411 the internal program monitoring my downloads is SABnzb.
I have tried to vary my number of simultaneous downloads to no real change. I am on SSL connections and am allowed to use up to 50, I am set at 15 to get the 1.7mbps I get.
Also I have been getting an intermittent service for the internet the modem losses and reconnects many times per day ( I have a ticket for this).
Is there anyway I can correct this download issue? What are others experiencing? My ISP answered this'' Hi,
I've checked with our newsgroup users here and 1.2-1.5 is the average download speed on the newsgroups servers. You are above the average at 1.7.
Newsgroups have a limited download speed and will not be at the speed of your general internet connection.''
My NEWS provider answered with this: ''Hello,
I'm sorry that your speeds are not what they should be. I have confirmed that we're not experiencing any problems that would lead to slow speeds. Please note that most ISPs have a set amount of bandwidth to disperse amongst their customers. We have never come close to reaching our bandwidth capacity, so we have no need to practice traffic management techniques to limit performance.
Even though Giganews may offer you unlimited and unthrottled bandwidth, we are still subject to the limitations of your ISP and home network. We can meet whatever level of performance, upload and download, that your ISP and home network permit.
I have reviewed our server logs, but don't see any problems associated with your account.
I have performed a traceroute on your IP address. Here is the result:

You appear to have an excellent connection to our server.
Please follow the below suggestions to try improving your speed:
- Please make sure you are downloading binaries. Headers download slower than binaries, as a fundamental characteristic of Usenet.
- If you're using the Giganews Accelerator, please connect without it until this problem is resolved. Remember to change the server setting in your newsreader from localhost to news.giganews.com or news-europe.giganews.com.
- Reboot your computer and all home networking equipment, including your modem and any routers or hubs.
- Temporarily disable all security software on your PC and home network, including firewalls, anti-virus software, and spyware detection software.
- If using a router or hub, please disable it temporarily and connect your broadband modem directly to your PC with an Ethernet cable.
- Increase the number of connections in your newsreader. Standard SSL enabled accounts can use up to 30, and Diamond accounts can use up to 50. We recommend using fewer connections than the maximum allowed in case some connections stall or drop.
- Please try connecting via each available port. If you disable SSL, you may connect via port 119, 80, and 23. If you enable SSL, you may connect via port 563 and 443. Many ISPs will block or limit traffic from port 119 or 563, so changing to another port can help workaround your ISP's network configuration. Please systematically try all 5 ports.
Please let us know if you still experience slow speeds after trying the above.
Thank you for your patience and understanding'' |

 | On 28/1 TSI cable you can always max out with Giganews (separately purchased account) from my experience. This means you can easily download with a speed of 3.2 MByte/sec or more).
Gigagnews is capable of a lot faster than the 1.7Megabyte/sec you see (I think this is what you mean instead of 1.7 megabit/sec) |
|
 | Yes that is correct for the Megabyte/sec not megabit/sec. Any idea why I can not get higher speeds? |
|
 | Are you plugged into the router or using wireless? A lot of times speed issues are wireless related.
Other than that it is likely something else local at your place. |

kovy join:2009-03-26 kudos:8 | reply to sarmiento Maybe do a download directly to your PC ?
Do you have a speed limiter on your newgroups program ? |
|
 | reply to darrylr No it is a direct Ethernet connection. I can only think that perhaps a test from the demarcation to see my download speeds. |
|
 | reply to kovy I do not think the NAS is at cause but I will make sure the NAS is at optimum setup for downloads. The Newsgroup pregram SABnzb is not speed limited. But I will double check with all this and and report back. |

The only thing I can see is something to your local setup... |

 | reply to sarmiento did you try SSL port 443? |
|
 | Yes I have and did not notice a remarkable difference. |
|
 | i have cable 28/1 and my download speed is 3.7MBps/29.6Mbps right now news.giganews.com 30 connections SSL port 443 edit: if you are using newsbin pro after changing the port to 443 restart the program |
