changing service and RCN promotional pricing

I currently have RCN triple play. I no longer need a home line. This is my question. I have heard that if I am changing my service, I can take advantage of the RCN promotional pricing packages. Is this true? It would save me a bunch the first year. Also, if I do this, and end up switching from a Moto dvr to a Tivo dvr, can those programs saved on my dvr be saved and moved to the Tivo? I have a bunch of kids stuff for my grand daughter that I would like to save.

highly unlikely on transferring the kids programs. Unless there is a way to get programs off of your Motorola to a PC. From what I understand, new customer rates are just for NEW customers.

The statement attached to the offer is:
Offer valid only for new residential RCN customers or customers who have not had RCN's service within the last 60 days

So if you drop the telephone line I think you would have to discontinue all service for 60 days and renew at the promotional rate.

I spoke to customer service. If you are "upgrading" your service, such as going to a bundled package like a double or triple play, then you can take advantage of the new subscriber rates. At least that's what I was told by the person I was on the line with. And as we know, you may get a different answer from a different person.

So if you have "Signature Digital Cable" for $59.99/mo, for a year you can upgrade to "Signature Digital TV & 25 Mbps High-Speed Internet" bundle for $79.99/mo (new subscriber rate) or the bundle "Signature Digital TV & 25 Mbps High-Speed Internet & Phone" for $109.99/mo.

I am not surprised that they would offer "new subscriber rates" for someone who is increasing their monthly bill.

My mother has a triple play package right now for $119.99/ month. While it seems reasonable I noticed that I can increase her cell phone plan on Verizon by $10 and get a bump from 200 to 700 "chargeable minutes" (nights and weekends and mobile to mobile are free)
200 Minutes $30
700 Minutes $40
Overage charge 45¢/Minute for both plans.

But I cannot "downgrade" the RCN plan to $79.99/mo .

I understand that RCN is following industry practices, of having sky high retail prices and then offering "special limited time deals". I don't take it personally.

If the Social Security money gets too tight, then the only way to cut costs significantly is to raise the Verizon rate by $10 to cover full time telephone use. Then you have to drop RCN service completely for 30-60 days, and reinstall it as: Digital TV & 25 Mbps High-Speed Internet (38 Channels) for $39.99/mo .

I wish cable companies would recognize that most senior citizens are very unlikely to cut services on a whim (and switch to Hulu+ or Netflix or live streaming of FoxNews). If they cut services it is because they simply need the money. I don't think the bottom will drop out of their business, and it would avoid unnecessary switching from cable to Satellite TV.

You will never get a straight answer from RCN. I was told three different times when calling RCN that when I move to my new house I will qualify for the new customer rates. When I called to actually set it up, I cannot even begin to tell you what a nightmare. One lady said she would handle everything and call me back. She never did, but when I got home all my current services were disconnected. When I called, they said not only did she disconnect me, but my work order for my transfer of new service was cancelled. I called again the next day to start over and was told I could get the new customer rates again. The rep began the process and mid-way through the call we were disconnected. When I called back, the new rep said that the work done previously was also cancelled and that all prior reps were wrong -- I cannot get a new customer rate when transferring/moving. I spoke to a supervisor who was entirely unphased by this horrible experience. She was unapologetic and didn't even offer to correct the reps who had misinformed me. After 7 and 1/2 years with RCN, I'm moving to FIOS. Don't waste your time trying to figure out if you can lower your rate. No one there knows what they are doing.

So a friend of mine, who was also not happy with his rates called and was told they couldn't do anything. So he cancelled his tv and just went with internet. He returned all his tv equipment. Now, barely two weeks go by. He calls and says he's still interested in RCN, but if they can't give him a deal, he's going Satellite. So they tell him that since he only has internet with them, and would be "upgrading to tv as well", he can get the New subscriber rates. What the hell? Really, you have to play those kinds of games?

How true is your last statement! I just called RCN to inquire about adding 50/6 internet service to my plan (currently only have TV service through RCN), and was quoted a price of $99 a month. When I asked why it wasn't $49.99 as stated on their website, I was told that it was a promotional price for NEW customers only. So, even though I was upgrading and adding a new service to my plan, I was not a new customer to RCN, so I had to pay double. Needless to say, I chose not to go with that price.
