Digital Converter (Motorola DTA)
Now that Comcast is charging $1.99 per digital converter, is this something I can buy like a cable modem so I don't have to pay Comcast every month? If so, where do you buy it and what kind? Thanks.
That's as cheap as it gets I'm afraid. The TV industry hasn't really been compelled to have open standard products for purchase like they have for their Internet services side of the business.
The only other option would be to buy a TiVo and rent a CableCARD from Comcast. But of course buying a TiVo out right is not cheap (cheapest model would be the TiVo HD for $150) and the TiVo has its own monthly fees (~$15/month) that are higher than $2/month.
you can get free refurbished Tivo's but you have sign a 2 year agreement for the tivo service.
Can a Tivo function as a basic tuner (no guide or DVR) without a Tivo subscription, or is it totally bricked until then?
no you need the subscription to the service.
just looked they are not offering the free tivo at this time, but this will the only way to get what you want because the cable box makers don't sell to the public.

Also, does the OP realize the cost of the cablecard to make that Tivo work, is going to cost MORE than $1.99/month??? (assuming it's being used for an additional outlet TV)
Right, that's why I started my reply saying the DTA is basically the cheapest deal out there.
