Re: [Parts Check] Looking For Mobo

Besides $40 can someone tell me the difference between these two chips?

"K" version means it's unlocked and can be overclocked. If you have no intention of OC'ing, then just go with the regular locked version and save the 40 bucks.

The 3770K has 100mhz more operating frequency.

Yeah, 3.4 to 3.5... my bet would be that in most circumstances that the difference would be undetectable.

How are the graphics on the 4000 for gaming? I know Intel says it's great but what are they going to say? It sucks? I have the 2000 on my i3 2100 and renders video well enough but I don't do any gaming on it. Mostly I play WoW but I do play the newer shooter games through their single player parts.

It's unsuitable. Get a discrete GPU.

I agree, and for that reason I would recommend building a system around an Ivy Bridge-based Xeon processor, such as the E3-1230.

All the benefits of an i7 (minus the useless GPU, which means lower wattage as well) for 2/3 the cost. Plus they come with a more-than-good-enough heatsink and fan, further reducing the cost.

Throw it on a nice Z77 MB like this one and you're golden!

You can still use the iGPU to drive a second monitor without taxing your main GPU. It also can accelerate hardware encoding, I believe.

But yeah, for someone who would normally pay $320 from Newegg for the 3770K, this isn't a bad choice. The Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 does have a locked processor, however, so you can't OC it very much.

The 3770K is still available for $220 from Microcenter, however.

I've tried running a second monitor off the integrated GPU on a different intel processor and it didn't run as well as running the second monitor off the discrete GPU. Hardware acceleration is highly dependant on the third-party drivers, and my experience hasn't been positive with that either. At best it didn't change anything. At worst it blue screened.

The E3-1230 is $199, $30 cheaper than the 3770k ($229)

Are there unlocked Xeon's?

Tom's had this board the best of the price class it was in:

I like the idea of reliability. Is it worth the price?

I've been pondering over the MSI range and whether it is worth getting the higher end GD80 or MPOWER, when the GD55 and GD65 are so much cheaper.

Before I was told go ASUS P8Z77-V PRO, but the MSI range certainly does ask the question on why ASUS, other than a friend likes to O/C the ASUS. The GD range seems to have enough for you needs and still have Intel LAN and other goodies like Thunderbolt (GD80).

Nope. Xeon processors are about efficiency, reliability and durability. All of which goes out the window when overclocking.

True. I hadn't thought about them being server CPU's. Probably don't want to mess with them.

They're a good option if you're using a socket that doesn't have tight restrictions on reference/base clocks (Xeons on Socket 1366=win). However, they're not viable on 1155 if you want to overclock.

What would be a good i5 option to the i7 3770K that is unlocked? If I lived near a Micro Center store my ass would have already bought the 3770K but paying $100 more at newegg is a bridge too far for me. I know the i5's are pretty stout on their own according to some stuff I've read.

Anyone have an i5 preference?

And has anyone heard of these folks:

They have the 3770K for $257 supposedly unopened/new.

LOL, they have a $56+ fee before delivery prices.

Thinking of this:

CPU: i5-3570k

Mobo: MSI Z77A-GD65

Water Cooling: Corsair H80i

I like this cooler because it will be good way to monitor temps. I just hope the hoses are long enough.

Both the 7870 and 7850 are fantastic midrange cards. You can't go wrong with either. (and hey, free games!)

I haven't been impressed with the single 120mm closed-loop rads. YMMV depending on what performance you are expecting, but $110 for a single rad is not impressive.

I'd go for the H100i (same price): »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···35181032

or for a little more, this thing is definitely a step up and lets you eventually customize it by adding components to the loop:

I have no place to install dual- side by side 120mm fans in my full sized case unless I'm missing something. I'm guessing you either have to mod your case for them or buy a case that is compatible? The H80i does use dual-120's.

A full size case should definitely allow 2x 120s in the top.

What case do you have?

I've been looking for alternatives to the Rosewill Thor case and I came across this. The NZXT SWITCH 810 has lots of headroom to install the H110 or even install it down under the drive bays. I think the moveable drive fan would probably get in the way of the video card.

Anyone have any experience with their cases or have any opinions good or bad about this case?

I had the HAF 922, which was a mid tower, and loved it. This one is still 5/5 eggs with over 1100 reviews--I'd say people like it.

Nice, thanks. Always looking for options.

The pcpartpicker site has been a great help. I ordered my Corsair HX750 Gold this morning so I have my RAM, PSU, I know I'm going to get a H110 cooler, and an 3770K. Case, mobo, and vid card are left so I'm back to where I was when I started this thread
