Plumbing in new home: hot and cold are reversed

So a continuation of problems with my cousins new home. The hot and cold are reversed for the ensuite tub and shower stall (on 2nd floor) but the sink is OK. Now the only way to fix this is either remove wall or tub tiles and expose the connections and fix or find the pipes (PEX) in the basement and somehow reverse them (so long they don't feed elsewhere). The other option is to leave it alone and live with it. My concern if they leave it alone, is for the children (10 and under) may scald themselves.

So should my cousin pursue the builder to fix the issue?

If it is brand new, I would.. Should be free if the builder did it..

I grew up in a house where the hot and cold were switched and i was fine.

What kind of controls for the tub and shower? If they are a single-handle design, it may be possible to make the correction by removing the control assembly.

Yes, it's a NEW home, which normally comes with a warranty that covers construction defects such as this.

Have builder/plumber fix it. If you switched the 2 dedicated lines in the basement that feed the upstairs bathroom, all you would need to do is switch the 2 hoses under the sink, but you'd still have a problem with hot water going to the toilet.

according to one homeseller whoes house i was inspecting for a buyer, hot water to the toilet is a "feature". After taking his morning dump the flush of the toilet ensured the water was instantly hot in the shower...

The builder should be responsible but if it's a single handle design then I think it's more likely that the mixing valve was installed backwards. It's a really simple fix.

I just dealt with this on a Moen. It was a bit perplexing at first since I was the plumber and getting the pipes right (hot left) is pretty straight forward when you use red and blue pex.
Remove the cartridge, rotate 180 re-install.
If this isn't the fix, then this is a building code defect and I would hold the builder responsible since it does not pass code.

Interesting, I was told the same thing by a landlord when I reported what seemed to me an incorrectly plumbed toilet (I didn't expect scalding hot water when I replaced a leaking flapper). Given the long distance of the master bathroom from the water heater it actually made sense.

It can also help prevent condensation on the outside of the porcelain if it's humid during the summer. At least that's what I've heard.

The tube are individual handles and the shower is one assembly. My cousin wants it fix but is afraid they would need to remove the tiles and open wall or tube enclosure to make the adjustments.

@SuperNet9: if it was the whole house then it may be acceptable but only one area and with young children, NO. Plus they paid half-million dollar for this home and they have this type of issue?

yes but this issue will try to get out of everything and by delaying and delyaing as they have in the past with their previous home and my uncle's home. You get so frustated and give up and do it your self or they tell you to go to home warranty.

With insulated tanks, condesation become less of an issue.

Different but similar

I showed up at a new house to connect their internet
The homeowners where visibly very pissed about something

They had begun moving in day before and the man had been looking forward to his first bath in the new massive tub in second story master bathroom

Turned out the plumbers forgot to glue the drain pipe so when he pulled the drain after his bath, the force of the water blew the fittings apart and blasted the whole load of water through the ceiling in the dining room
Of course, many of the moving boxes had been stacked in the dining room
They had chunks of drywall all mixed in with collapsed soggy boxes of their stuff

I didn't bring it up but wondered how the hardwood flooring was going to handle the mess

Get them to fix it, because when you ever sell the house guess who the buyer is going to ask to fix it.

It's a code violation. It needs to be fixed, even if they pull that wall down. They need to fix it to code. If it's a single handle, the fix is easy, but they should do it, not the owner.

If this is a brand new house, then there isn't even a valid question here. Make the builder fix it. He will back charge the plumber for the cost of repairing the wall/tile/etc. afterwards.

A good home inspector should have flagged this without a second thought.

Home inspections are generally waived for new construction.
