 | [AB] email down email has been down for 8 hours. Problems happen but surely with all of the resources at Shaw's disposal they could post a message on their website or be a little more forthcoming on their voice mail. Some people still count on email to conduct business. Your response is little more than an Air Canada shrug. |

 | While Shawmail was down a couple days ago, I received 70 spam to my inbox in 12 hours, whereas I normally get 2 or 3 a month. Today I've received 5 in under an hour so far...Make that 9 so far, as I just got 4 more. WTF is going on? |

Get gmail
Eat cake
Seriously, no one sane will tell you to keep an ISP provided e-mail. Technicians at Shaw are of the same opinion - e-mail for them is a useless value-add-on, to market-speak people into: Ooo we provide THE ALMIGHTY E-MAIL!!!
Get real, and get off ISP mail FFS |

Get real, and get off ISP mail FFS I've used telus and then Shawmail for the past 20 years without a problem until this past Thursday. Are you actually naive (another term for STUPID) enough to tell me that Gmail won't have problems somewhere down the road? I have Gmail also, and I get more spam in my inbox than i had before last Thursday. I was NOT seeking an "opinion", so please keep them to yourself.
What I would like is to get a reply from a Shaw Tech. |

 | reply to gord I've never relied on an ISP for a quality email service. Plus, you never know when service is going to degrade and you will be switching providers. Such better free options out there, and yes gmail is one of them. Haven't had a single issue to date. |

 | reply to gord email is inherently unreliable. If you're relying on free email provided by your ISP to conduct any sort of serious business, you may want to reevaluate your needs.
gmail is great, but it's no magic bullet either. If you're one of the unlucky ones who gets their gmail account locked for a seemingly random reason, it can be weeks before it's resolved.
Ultimately you get what you pay for. If email is critical for you, you need to have someone one the other end of the phone who is getting paid to fix problems when (not if) they pop up. Either that or you need to host it yourself.
Shaw deserves criticism for a number of things, but I don't think this is one of them. I've been with them for 10+ years, and this hasn't happened before, so I would chalk an 8 hour email outage up under the category of "stuff happens" |
|
1 edit | If your financial accountant (or whatever) is using a @gmail.com or @shaw.ca email address, if they can't take the time (or pay someone) to setup a proper domain for your business (yes this is to the people who claim to have lost 100k+ from this day's outage) does that not take away from your professional image? Also, you are using the residental mail server for your business, the same standards are simply not expected -- Yes, I am not employed and looking for IT work. Have passport, will travel. |

I think there was a few minutes a few years ago it was down, but they must have redundant servers for emergencies because its a pretty stable service.
My main reason for choosing a 3rd party service was that I disliked having to change my email address every time I switched providers. Now I get to keep the same one no matter which ISP I use. I quite like that. |

Last Thursday, everyone else was unable to send or receive. I was able to receive....Spam...Lots of spam....Ongoing spam. |
