Portent of Future Trouble» www.cbc.ca/news/canada/n ··· uth.htmlHow senseless, and premeditated, hopefully they wont be able to plead but these are good boys, you know just carrying around gasoline and accidently spilled it all over the playground and he didnt meant to drop the cigarette, or whatever BS story will try to be promulaged by some greasy lawyer. In any case, we will hear from this group again, unfortunately. :-( Meanwhile our taxes go up. |

Every teen at some point has burned down a park. Don't tell me you never bought a gallon of gas and lit someplace up. Joking aside, they'll get probation. |

I had a friend growing up who lit his house on fire because he decided to lite a 12L Jerry can on fire because he thought it was "water" to extinguish his cigarette.
Yep, stupidity and teenage years all go together. |

make the kids pay the damages...they likely don't have money, so they will be forced to work it off...picking up garbage in the parks/roadways at $15/hr until the debt is paid off. |

I agree, they should be forced to work weekends and breaks to repay the $100,000 cost. Playgroup equipment, especially when wheelchair accessibility is involved, is expensive. Not just the equipment but the rules and regulations and all that extra stuff that comes with setting up a park. Very sad. |

We simply have to STOP making excuses for criminals and criminal behaviour... Stop insisting criminals are victims of society...
We as a society MUST hold people accountable for their actions.... |

Smack on the wrist, a couple of hours community service and no criminal record once the kids turn 18. |

Dude, they're 15 and 16. It's not like they're irrevocably broken career-criminals. This is the time to step into their lives and figure out what the fuck is going on with their life goals and parental figures. |

Dude, we are not talking about kids playing hookey from school... It's quite possible this fire in a different location could have gotten of control and spread to people's homes... And a 15 year old should know right from wrong... |

Drives me crazy when the media buy into those, "He's a good boy and never did a thing wrong" stories. 99% of the time you find out later the little sweetie had a record a mile long.

And a 15 year old should know right from wrong... Yea, no shit. Well adjusted kids don't burn down what belongs to others, especially playgrounds that are enjoyed by children. There could certainly be some lousy parents to blame here but now's the time to teach these kids right from wrong... find a way to punish them while they compensate the community for what they destroyed. |

Plenty of well-adjusted kids still do stupid things, it's a part and parcel of that whole judgement centre of the brain not being fully developed until we're into our early 20s. A 15 year-old might know right from wrong in a very broad sense, but that doesn't mean that they are able to comprehend it or put it into the practice the same way us adults can. Knowing that well-adjusted kids still do stupid things, the difference between that well-adjusted kid and a maladjusted kid isn't in the action, it's in the response. A well-adjusted kid typically realizes just how badly they fucked up when called on it and will show remorse for their actions and not do something so stupid again. In contrast, the maladjusted kid doesn't care and will continue to do it again and again and again. |

But the parents shouldn't. They should have to cover the cost of damages and crimes committed by minor children. Together they should fork over the $100,000 even if it means going in to debt. |
