 | How fast is fast? They've done it in other markets and now Comcast is increasing internet speeds in the Chicago area.
They'll still have an Economy package (3Mbps) but their Performance tier, which is their every day speed, will now be 20(25)/4(5). Their top speed will be 105 Mbps!! (but is that really needed?).
So they will have 3, 20(25), 50 and 105. WOW has 2,15,30 and 50. Comcast's upload speeds will be higher in most cases. It would be good if WOW improves on theirs a bit.

| My 50/10 went to 105/22. It's fast and makes ever switching back to WOW almost impossible. It took WOW forever to get to 50. I can only imagine it will take even longer for the next transition. -- "You lie!" Talk about an understatement, Joe. |

 | WOW can barely maintain/keep up with what they have. They are too busy buying smaller companies and worrying about profit to improve conditions for existing customers. |
|
 | reply to baess I've also been following Comcasts speed increases, and wondering if WOW will try to keep up. I really hope so. I am not thrilled on going back to Comcast, but they really seem to lead WOW on most technologies. I miss the days when WOW had faster speeds, better service, and cheaper prices than the competition. |

I'd be just fine with that, no need for something like 105/22 personally although it would be pretty awesome...haha. Pairing 5 upload with 50 download just seems silly to me but I have it. |

 | reply to baess Once you get over 50 meg download speeds.. the bottleneck starts to be the servers you're trying to access. So yeah at 105 meg.. I can see a cap that a lot of servers would place on your connection so you really wouldn't see the full 105 meg download except on the bigger networks.. like facebook or CNN.
But I guess if you do a lot of torrent downloading it would come in handy.
And the reason for the slower upload speeds is because WOW! and the other cable companies don't want you to set up a server and run a webpage from your house and pay for residential service instead of the higher priced business class service. They won't tell you that though. They will say something to the effect of the power output needed to upload is greater thus they can only offer those speeds.... but that's not true. |

 | reply to baess Speaking of speeds I just saw that WOW changed their speed test page.
»speedtest.wowway.com/
The URL is now not site specific but it still identifies a server location. The graphics have changed and there is now a test for Ping. |

For us, with three kids going at it all the time, the extra speed comes in handy. You never know what they're doing to suck up bandwidth. It also makes video streaming very smooth, regardless of normal internet usage going on by others in the house. And for basically the same cost, it's hard to beat a 2x upgrade. -- "You lie!" It really makes me laugh when I see people post that the only reason anyone needs these faster speeds is that they must be doing something illegal.
There are four people in my household and as far as I'm concerned the faster the better. |

| The thing is, as more and more streaming comes on line and more devices are in use in a household, the whole "doing something illegal" argument becomes annoying. I know for a fact that my one of my sons and my daughter are constantly streaming HD content either from Amazon or from Comcast.
It just seems to me that there are many uses for greater and greater bandwidth. The more we're given, the more ways we'll find in utilizing it. -- "You lie!" Talk about an understatement, Joe. |

It's nothing anymore for my wife and I to watch a HDX movie from Vudu, while our two sons are each watching an hd movie/tv show from Netflix. |

 | reply to baess Never implied it was for illegal use. Torrent downloading is not all illegal. If you think it's all illegal use then maybe you're using it the wrong way.
But for solo use, website servers will be the bottleneck as most won't send you data at 105 meg download speeds.
If you think I was implying something else then you're greatly misunderstanding my post. |

| I don't torrent anyway--never have. But I agree with what you're saying about a single website server probably not serving that fast. But, as we've said, it's really about how many users may be hitting the connection at the same time. At 20 up, sending files has also now become more palatable. -- "You lie!" Talk about an understatement, Joe. |

And no, I'm not doing anything illegal! |

·WOW Internet and..
| There are a lot of practical uses for a 50/10, or even 105 down... in my case, the upload speed especially would come in handy during use of my VPN. Although all of the above posts are just speculation (and so is this) as to why WOW doesn't offer it.. I doubt it's because WOW doesn't want people setting up a server. After reviewing the TOS... it seems WOW is more concerned with people not operating public servers, ie web server, public ftp server.. public file sharing etc. Hosting up a media server (like plex) that uses an uncommon port and a private, personal login should be ok... (I think based on my readings). My best guess would be lack of demand, since they're a small company, coupled with lack of bandwidth/resources widely available to them. WOW was one of the last networks around to upgrade to D3... an upgrade I'm guessing they're still working the kinks out with. Not all serviceable areas have D3 yet with them, which my bet is their priority, at least over offering 105 down to current D3 areas. |
