[Speed] Not getting full download speed

Hello,

I just upgraded to 50MBps down, 10MBps up, tier and would like some advice as to Dr.tcp settings.

»/tweakr/block:···a=normal

I've reset my router and modem but I'm only getting the upload speed not the download yet. They said it could take up to 24 hours. It's only been about 3 hours since upgrading so maybe I should wait until tomorrow?

»stage.results.speedtest.comcast.···1072.png

Your Speed Result:
Download Speed: 15839 kbps (1979.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 9986 kbps (1248.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Thank you.

Re: [Speed] Just upgraded to 50/10 tier

What O/S are you using?
After xp, DrTCP offers little improvement as newer windows versions self tune quite effectively (and disabling the self tune is not a hack for beginners)

Are you connected over wireless? If so, plug into the router directly and try it. Also, what router is this? If it's older, it may not be capable of handling the 50 Mbps speeds.

Dolphins, in line with that which pflog posted: I notice that in your DSLR bio you list your modem as a Motorola SB 5100, if that still holds, then by all means you need to upgrade to a D3 modem for the Blast tier. I don't even really recommend a D2 modem on the performance tier, although it can work ok.

If you are renting the modem, Comcast can upgrade you, if you own it, then I'd recommend the Zoom 5341J (make sure it is the "J" model), closely followed by the Motorola SB6141.

There's your problem as PeteC2 See Profile surmised. You need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to support the 50 Mbps speeds.

Aw crap, I was afraid that may be a problem.

Are you 100% sure I need DOCSIS 3.0? This isn't a blast tier, it's constant speed.

100000%

A single DOCSIS channel cannot handle 50Mbps. You need channel bonding to get over 39Mbps and that requires a D3 modem.

OK thanks.

I'll most likely be back in a few hours with a new modem.

Recommendations on the best modem and where to buy in NJ? I'm not going buy online and have to pay for overnight shipping.

50/10 is Comcast's Blast tier, don't confuse that with power boost. As pflog says, you can not hit 50Mbps on a D2 modem - period.

Time to retire the old 5100...

On the bright side, there are benefits besides speed alone when moving to a D3 modem. The bonded channels will give you increased reliability, especially when traffic is heavy.

SB6121. You can get em at any store.

I would recommend Amazon, but if you dont want to wait, you are going to pay about 15% more at a brick and mortar.

I believe you can get either of those at Best Buy.

Why not get an 8x4 multiple bonded channel capable modem like a Zoom 5341J or a Moto SB6141 rather than a 4x4 and make a more future proof purchase ? These are now similarly priced.

If local "brick and mortar", then either Staples or Best Buy will have them. Walmart, at least in my area, tends to have the older modems only on hand.

IMHO, do not> go for the older SB6121 Motorola as it is a "4x4" (4 channels down/4 channels up) model.

If you are buying, you want the most up to date D3 model available. Soon enough, Docsis 3.1 will appear as it is.

Buy either the Zoom 5341J, Motorola SB6141, or the Cisco DPC3008.

I recommend the 5341J only because from the Comcast threads I see, it appears to have had the least number of issues...however, any of the three would be good choices.

At most local stores the Zoom 5341J is about $10 cheaper, and it has a very good reputation with Comcast users.

(Yes, I use the 5341J)
