[NV] Router suggestions for Ultimate

I currently have a Cisco E1550 router, my desktop is wired through it.
I got the recent bump to 150 but when I test the speed, it still maxes out at 55 mbps or so, if I go directly from the modem to my computer it will hit 90-95. I spoke with Cox and they were saying that some routers can't process the speeds?

What models have you guys been using that has been getting your full bandwidth?

Thanks

Whats your price range? I have a RT-N66U and I love it. A bit on the pricey side, but well worth it IMHO.

I second the Asus as well..

Looks like you also only have a 10/100 NIC in your PC from that speedtest.

Don't forget to update that as well.

I agree with the Asus RT-N66U, a little high in price, but very good, and worth it imo. As you have Asus that is trying to make better, and better firmware's for the unit. Also have RMerlin firmware build's that are based off the asus build's, but improved with some added features, and even have the option of Tomato firmware from Shibby/Toastman. So all in all, what's not to like about the option's this router gives you, and it works very well imo.

My preference would be a Mikrotik router running RouterOS. The configuration possibilities are endless.

I'm using a older HP 7900 small form factor PC and running the free pfSense firewall/router software. Tossed in a couple PCIe (not PCI) Gigabyte Ethernet cards and it idles along even under a maxed out connection. Total cost was just over $100.

For WiFi I use an external Access Point, or you can set up a cheap WiFi router as an access point to save a few bucks.

Great idea, and something I want to do one day for sure, but I think the OP was looking for suggestions a bit more...obtainable? Atleast thats how I took it. I think even my suggestion of a RT-N66U may be a bit overkill. I think to best answer question, we need more info:

Price point?
Whats your skill level 1 to 10. With 1 being a novice to 10 being a full Cisco engineer.
How important is wireless?
What kind of wireless devices do you have and how many? Mostly G? Or N?
Do you do any streaming internally? NAS?
How many wired connections do you need?

It seems strange but for most folks pfSense is very easy to get going, stick in the CD, reboot, let the installer run and pick a few options. A short tutorial is here (PDF) »doc.pfsense.org/smiller/pfSenseQ···uide.pdf

The hardware versus speed guide is here: »www.pfsense.org/index.php?option···temid=49

"51-200 Mbps - No less than 1.0 GHz CPU"

So it looks like you'd be fine even with PCI cards at that speed.

That is a great idea and would be somethign I would look into down the line.

I did actually just finish setting up the ASUS, it is probably a bit more than I need but I was looking at that router a few weeks ago. I haven't looked into some of the other firmware options, does it seem to help a lot?

I know I already grabbed the router, but Ill answer the questions anyway in case you guys have some more information or someone else comes through the forum with a similar need

Price Point- I got a decent discount on the ASUS through work.

My skill level is probably about 6-7, set up a lot of stuff here at home with different configurations.

Wireless is getting more important since we are adding more and more devices but the main issue is the main desktop which is wired. We run live web shows off of it, so that is the main computer using the bandwidth.

Wireless systems we have 3 gaming systems, WDTV Live, iMac and a few phones and two tablets

There is some streaming done to the XBOX and the WDTV live internally.

4 wired connections do the trick.

Thanks for all the help guys, appreciate it.

Be sure to do a firmware upgrade. And I always like to do a factory reset after a upgrade in case the upgrade changed any of the already configured settings, but that's personal preference. The upgrade will get you AIcloud which is useful, though still a little buggy. What I like best is it also lets you adjust the Tx power of the wireless and to re-purpose the WPS button (which I disable to security concerns) to a wireless on/off button. Hope you enjoy it.
