1 edit | Idiot-proof TV and AV system with Insight DVR Louisville, KY I have a client who is having a lot of difficulty with her TV and AV setup. She had a nice Toshiba 55" TV, an Insight DVR, a Sony Blu-ray player, an Apple TV and a VCR/DVD combo. She is unwilling to learn any of the concepts behind switching inputs on the TV to select the different devices. When she pushes the All On button on the Insight remote and the TV does not work (i.e. can't watch DVR / cable) she gets frustrated.
So without getting further into her issues or limitations I need help on finding a solution. I need a remote control system (like a Pronto maybe) that is totally idiot-proof. It must have a button to watch TV that when you press it it just works. There's no time or patience or desire to review "is the TV on HDMI2, is the cable box powered on", etc.
As I understand it most TVs, DVDs and other devices accept discreet codes from a remote. If the TV is on and you tell it turn on, nothing will happen. A friend of mine in the AV business said that there's no discreet code for an Insight DVR to turn it on. There's only one remote code for power. When it's sent, if the DVR is on it will turn it off. If the DVR is off it will be turned on.
Seems like I researched leaving the DVR on 24/7 but don't recall why I didn't do that before.
So, is there a totally foolproof 100% system that will let you watch TV or whatever you want without all the fuss?

| Hi Info time.
You might want to look at a Logitech remote. I have one and it is amazing. It is pretty idiot proof, with the exception of programming the remote itself. You go to the Logitech remote and program the buttons on it. So, when I press the "watch tv" button, it turns my TV and DirecTV DVR on.
If I press "listen to music", it turns my DVR to the music channels, turns on my stereo system, and the remote then controls the stereo and the DVR. it does not control the volume on the TV anymore.
It is pretty cool what you can cue in to the remote.
You might want to try one of these remotes for your client. The key is to continue to hold the remote facing all of your devices. The screen on the remote says "hold remote facing devices" and the screen will tell you to move the remote at that point. It might work in her situation.
It also programs which inputs to use, so for example, if the VCR is on AV1, it automatically switches your tv to AV1 and turns the VCR on when you press watch a movie.
Just some thoughts. | | | reply to infotime You can program the Insight remote to turn on the TV and one Aux device... Click here to learn how to program the remote:

| reply to infotime A lot of TVs allow you to change the default name on the input like HDMI 1 can be changed to TV, HDMI 2 changed to DVD etc..
Go into the TV's set up. Then all they have to do is rename inputs to what she/user wishes
Then you can match the input to her remote settings like Aux is DVD, Cable is DVR, etc.. (maybe buy a p-touch and label things for her on the remote, also you will find a p-touch is VERY helpful for other things as well). Takes a bit of work but once done its real simple to do. -- Intel I7-930 2.80GHz, X58A-UD3R Mobo, G.Skill 6GB Triple Channel Ram, EVGA 560 Video, Samsung 830 256GB SSD, 2 VelociRaptors 150GB Each, Windows 7 Home Premium x64,
