[ADSL2] DSL Extreme Fusion modem compatibility

Hello.

I am a current DSL Extreme customer with the 6Mbps residential service and I am planning on upgrading to the new 20Mbps Fusion service. Before I do, I'd like to know if my modem/router, a Zoom ADSL X7N, will work with the new service. The customer service agent on the phone swore up and down that it wouldn't, but I think she is mistaken.

The exact specifications for my modem can be found here.

I do appreciate any information.

That one should work just fine, as long as it hasn't been firmware locked by a previous provider. If you bought that from a regular store, it'll work. If you got it from another ISP, it SHOULD still work, but I can't swear by it since it might have some customized firmware on it.

I bought it outright from Amazon, it's not an ISP provided modem or anything so I'm pretty sure it's not using custom firmware.

I do also have the Comtrend CT-5072T (the model that the customer service person told me I absolutely had to have) provided by DSL Extreme from years ago, but I never had a need to use it since I've always used my own modems.

Thank you for the response. I will make the switch and give the Zoom a go. If it doesn't work, I can always daisy chain the Comtrend into the Zoom.

Just be aware that Fusion is, "up to" 20 Mbps; but actual speed will depend on the loop length; per this chart by Sonic.net, LLC (the Fusion wholesale provider):

»New Fusion average speed/distance chart.

Before I do, I'd like to know if my modem/router, a Zoom ADSL X7N, will work with the new service. The customer service agent on the phone swore up and down that it wouldn't, but I think she is mistaken.

Based on the linked specs, I would expect that modem to work just fine.

Even if the speed were the same as my current 6Mbps connection, the phone service offers more and I would still save at least $5 over my current DSL + phone service.

I appreciate the heads up though.

If you're getting 6Mbps now, that means you're decently close to your CO, which means you're well within range for the ADSL2+ tone range to make a difference. In other words, I fully expect your speed to go up significantly after the switch, although I couldn't predict exactly how much, especially with only that little data. If you want to send me your account info, I could take a look and see if I can get you a better prediction, but fair warning: it'd still be a prediction, not a guarantee.

I don't think Fusion could ever be slower than existing service; but there are factors making predictions of improvement uncertain. In my case, a residence at 9,156 feet from the CO only showed an estimated MaxSync of 5200 kbps, based on SpeedStream 4100 data. Because AT&T wants a minimum sync of 6016 kbps for 6.0 Mbps service, we were stuck at their 3.0 Mbps. When I switched, the new ZTE 831II shipped by Sonic.net first sync was 5985 kbps; for 5.15 Mbps down. It takes a couple of weeks, with the modem always on, for the modem and DSLAM to find the "sweet spot". Ours finally settled at 5785 kbps, for a measured down speed of 4.8 Mbps. I would suspect you will get faster Internet.

Worst case would be no change; barring problems with wiring. I believe you get everything I got. All for (in our case) about half the full AT&T bill (for voice and data).

I've got us on a static IP address, complete with user configured rDNS. I think, given AT&T's obvious direction, DSLX was wise to cut a deal with Sonic.net for Fusion service.

As I was placing the order, I was notified that there will be an additional $15/month tax + fees imposed by my city, bringing the $40 Fusion plan up to $55/month. That is ridiculous, so I will not be upgrading.

Thank you guys for the information. I am sorry to have wasted your time with this.

As I recall, AT&T also has local taxes and regulatory fees. Our last, full month's bill from AT&T was $103 and some change. Our first full month's bill from Sonic.net was $50 and some change.

My AT&T land line bill is roughly $15/month total and my 6Mbps service with DSL Extreme is roughly $30/month total. I was hoping the additional phone services offered by Fusion would be worth it and any extra speed would be a bonus. Bandwidth is rather the low priority for me, I care more about latency, which is already great for me with DSL Extreme.

For the extra $10/month I would have to pay, I would rather just stay put. Again, I apologise for taking your time.

May I ask what local AT&T service you have? The most bare-bones AT&T landline plan (Measured Rate Service) now costs $18.25/month before taxes here in Pasadena. The rates were just increased by $3 on March 1. Plus you're probably paying another $10 or so in taxes each month.
